Customers in India are looking to buy vehicles that offer low running costs without compromising on features. In the premium hatchback segment, two strong options are the new Toyota Glanza e-CNG and the Tata Altroz iCNG. While the Glanza facelift focuses on class-leading fuel economy, LEVEL 2 ADAS tech and refinement, the Tata Altroz relies on its twin-cylinder technology, usable boot space, and a 5-star safety rating
Here is a detailed comparison of how these two premium CNG hatchbacks compare across fuel efficiency, performance, practical luggage space and tech

For CNG buyers, fuel efficiency is the top priority. The Glanza takes the lead in certified fuel economy, while the Altroz provides competitive range. However, both models offer automatic gearboxes in their CNG lineups.
Toyota Glanza CNG: Delivers a fuel efficiency of 33.61 km/kg with manual gearbox, keeping per-kilometre running costs exceptionally low during daily city commutes. The Glanza CNG AMT version delivers an even higher 34.47 km/kg, making it the most fuel-efficient CNG hatchback in its class.
Tata Altroz iCNG: it offers a certified fuel economy of 26.20 km/kg to 27.80 km/kg. The official mileage figure is lower than the Glanza hatchback. The Altroz iCNG includes a Single Advanced ECU that allows the engine to start directly in CNG mode, reducing daily petrol consumption during cold starts.

Under the bonnet, both hatchbacks use 1.2-litre engines calibrated for dual-fuel option.
Glanza Drive Character: The Z-Series engine delivers its peak CNG torque lower in the rev range (101.8 Nm at 2,900 rpm), offering smooth power delivery and reduced gear shifts during urban commutes.
Altroz Drive Character:This one offers slightly higher peak output in CNG mode (73.5 PS / 103 Nm) providing linear acceleration and predictable highway causing speeds.
The biggest practical distinction between these two hatchbacks lies in how their CNG storage systems are packaged into the chassis:
Tata Altroz iCNG (Packaging Winner): Tata’s twin-cylinder technology places two 30-litre CNG tanks underneath the boot floorboard, leaving 20-litres of flat, usable luggage space capable of holding full-sized suitcases.
Toyota Glanza e-CNG: it uses a single, large 55-litres cylinder mounted inside the boot, which significantly reduces vertical cargo space and limits luggage capacity compared to the Altroz.
