At a starting price of Rs 12.74 lakh, the Maruti Jimny is India’s most budget-friendly SUV with a 4x4 system. Its less-than-4-metre size and up to 1,210 kg kerb weight makes it go over bad roads easily. The car comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 103bhp and 134.2Nm that can be had with either a 5MT or AT. It is a global product and is famous for its reliability and ruggedness during off-roading. 

Mahindra Thar (3 Door) - Rs 15 Lakh - Rs 17.20 Lakh

Mahindra Thar comes with a 4x4 system in both petrol and diesel engines. Being under 4 metres, Mahindra has competitively priced the SUV. Compared to the Jimny, the Thar 3 door feels more premium with features like electric ORVMs, cruise control, rear parking sensors and hill descent control. There are two types of roof options with the Thar - soft top and hard top. 

Mahindra Thar Roxx (5 Door) - Rs 18.79 Lakh - Rs 22.49 Lakh

Recently launched Mahindra Thar Roxx is essentially a Thar five door with a long list of features and powerful engines. It boasts off-road equipment like engine drag torque control, brake locking differential, rollover mitigation and brake disc wiping. As it shares major underpinnings with the Scorpio N, this Thar is more off-road capable and spacious at the same time. Unlike the three door Thar, the Roxx comes with a 4x4 unit only with the 2.2-litre diesel engine.

Force Gurkha 3 Door - Rs 16.75 lakh

Next up, the new Force Gurkha is another sub-4-metre SUV on this list and comes only with a 2.6-litre diesel engine mated to a manual gearbox. This unit produces 138bhp and 320Nm, enough to tackle the most bad roads. Notable features include a snorkel for improved water wading, 205mm ground clearance and 205mm ground clearance, It has 39-degree approach, 37-degree departure and 28-degree ramp over angles.

Mahindra Scorpio N - Rs 13.85 Lakh - Rs 24.54 Lakh

With the Scorpio N, Mahindra has tried to offer useful features and superior off-roading capabilities. Under the hood, it gets the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine in the highest state of tune - 172.54bhp and 370Nm (MT) and 400Nm (AT).
