Honda may be late to India’s electric car race, but it is planning a smart entry. The company has confirmed that its first all-new electric car will debut between April 2026 and March 2027, but it will not be based on the Elevate SUV as earlier expected. Instead, Honda is working on a fresh model built specifically for India with maximum localisation.
When Honda launched the Elevate SUV, the company had announced that an electric version was on the cards by 2026. But now, officials have clarified that the India-first EV will follow a different path. This shift signals Honda’s intention to avoid direct competition with the crowded mid-size electric SUV space.

Honda has kept its strategy under wraps, but reports suggest two strong possibilities:
Amaze EV - Honda’s highest-selling sedan in India, already popular among budget-focused buyers.
All-new Electric Sedan - To fill the gap in the mass-market EV sedan space, where the Tata Tigor EV is currently the only choice.
The EV SUV race is heating up with models like Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra BE 6, MG ZS EV, and Maruti eVitara in the pipeline. Jumping straight into this space could make it tough for Honda to break through. By targeting a sedan or compact EV, the brand could carve out a niche of its own.
Alongside its EV launch, Honda is expected to build a network of charging stations in big cities and on highways. This infrastructure push will be key to making its first electric car practical and attractive for Indian buyers.
More details about Honda’s first electric car for India are expected in the coming months. With localisation, fresh design, and the possibility of an affordable sedan, Honda’s EV could be a big game-changer in the Indian market.
