Ford Fiesta to return as a compact electric hatch It will be based on Renault's AmpR Small Platform
It is no secret that Ford has completely axed the Fiesta nameplate to accommodate the Puma subcompact crossover for the European markets. However, a new media report claims that the Ford Fiesta nameplate might return as an all-electric model in Europe. The American automaker has joined hands with Renault Group to develop two affordable electric cars based on the Renault’s AmpR Small platform.
The report also reveals the speculative rendering of the future Fiesta EV based on the Renault R5. The all-electric model comes with a closed-off front fascia, featuring smooth panel with a gloss-black panel forming a moustache motif. Other changes include slim headlights with tri-DRLs and air intakes on the lower bumper. The electric SUV will carry a typical hatchback styling, and is expected to sit under 4 meters in length.
The cabin is expected to be equipped with high-end tech, and most of its electronics are likely to be shared with Renault. It is expected to get a dual 10-inch displays for a digital driver’s display and a touchscreen infotainment unit. This is a Google-based Renault operating system with over-the-air update capabilities. Interior quality will witness several changes in terms of soft-touch materials, and new fabrics for seats. The Born-EV platform or Skateboard architecture will also help Ford to create spacious cabin.
The Renault R5 measures 3922mm in length, 1774mm in width and 1498mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2540mm. It is expected that the Ford Fiesta EV will also carry similar dimensions, sitting under 4 meters in length. The hatch will utilise the Renault Group’s 400-volt AmpR-Small architecture. The electric Fiesta is likely to feature a multi-arm rear suspension and a low-mounted battery for comfort and taut body control.
The next Ford Fiesta EV is likely to get a front-axle-mounted electric motor with power output estimated around 120-150hp. A sporty ST variant could join the line-up, which is expected to get a 210hp motor. The electric model is expected to be offered with 40kWh and 52kWh NMC battery packs with an estimated range of up to 400km.
