The long-awaited Mahindra Thar Roxx has finally been launched in the country at a starting price of Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The company has only announced the prices of the rear-wheel-drive version of the SUV, and the 4x4 version will arrive in the next few days.
For the Thar and the Thar Roxx, Mahindra & Mahindra has set up a combined monthly production capacity of 9,500 units. To set up production capacity and development of the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Mahindra has invested Rs 1,000 crore. The new 5-door model will also lead to cannibalization with the Thar 3-door and the Scorpio-N. It could impact the sales of these two models. Mahindra would aim to sell around 6,000 units of the Thar Roxx per month.
The 3-door Thar comes with a limitation and is mostly bought as a secondary car in the country. Mahindra launches Thar Roxx as a more family oriented lifestyle SUV, which offers space to accommodate 5 adults along with a big boot space. Moreover, the SUV gets modern tech and features which are missing in the 3-door model.

In terms of proportions, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is 4,428mm in length, 1,870mm in width and 1,923mm in height. The SUV rides on 2850mm long wheelbase, which is 400mm longer than the 3-door model.
Compared to the 3-door model, the Thar Roxx is 443mm longer, 50mm wider and 68mm taller. It has a fuel tank of 57-litres capacity, which is again 12-litres higher than the 3-door sibling. The new SUV has a water wading capacity of 650mm.
Thanks to the longer wheelbase and bigger size, the Mahindra Thar Roxx has more space in the second-row. The SUV has separate doors to access the second-row seats, which are missing in the smaller Thar. In the 3-door Thar, one has to adjust the front co-passenger seat and jump in to access the second-row. This makes it completely irrelevant among family buyers, as older people face problems to reach second-row. Addition of rear doors and foot steps addresses this problem and allows easy ingress and egress in the second-row.
Another Plus in the Mahindra Thar Roxx is the availability of modern comfort and convenience features along with good safety tech. The SUV has leatherette seats with ventilation function for both front occupants. It gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch digital instrument console, automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, rear AC vents, adjustable headrests for all 5 passengers, a panoramic sunroof and others. The SUV also gets a 6-way powered driver's seat and recline function for the second-row seats.
On the safety front, the SUV gets six airbags, TPMS, front & rear parking sensors, reverse camera, 3 point seat belt for all seats, height adjustable seat belts for front occupants, Auto-dimming IRVM, and others. It also gets electronic stability control (ESC), ABS with EBD, engine drag torque control, vehicle dynamics control, hill hold control, hill descent control, hydraulic brake assist, traction control system, roll over mitigation, brake locking differential, brake disc wiping, etc.
The new Thar Roxx is built on the 3G or 3rd Generation platform that debuted in the Scorpio-N. The platform is modified for the Thar Roxx and is claimed to be lighter and stronger than the older platform. Not just the platform, the SUV shares the suspension setup with the Scorpio-N.
It comes with independent front suspension with frequency dependent damping (FDD) and MTV-CL (Multi tuning valve- Concentric land) dampers. At the rear, the SUV gets coil spring with Watt's Linkage with Frequency dependent damping (FDD), HRS (Hydraulic Rebound Stopper) & MTV-CL (Multi tuning valve - Concentric land) dampers. The SUV ensures a stable and less bouncy ride compared to the 3-door model.
The Thar Roxx is offered with both petrol and diesel fuel options including a 2.0-litre, turbo petrol direct injection (TGDI) and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel. The petrol version is only available as a RWD model, while the turbo diesel is offered with both RWD & 4x4 drive options.
The petrol engine produces 2 states of tunes - 160hp/330Nm and 174hp/380Nm Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. Similarly, the diesel engine is tuned to produce 150hp of power and 330Nm of torque. The powertrain produces up to 172hp and 370Nm of torque with automatic gearbox & 4x4 drive option. The engine can be paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
The Thar Roxx is available in 7 trim levels - MX1, MX3, AX3L, MX5, AX5L and AX7L. The SUV's petrol range starts at Rs 12.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 19.99 lakh. On the other hand, the diesel Roxx is priced at Rs 13.99 lakh for the base variant and Rs 20.49 lakh for the top-end AX7L RWD automatic variant. The company is yet to announce the prices of the AWD diesel version of the SUV.
