India approves 4,874 new EV chargers under PM E-Drive scheme New Bharat e-Charge app also under development Charging expansion could help boost EV sales across India
The Government of India has approved a major expansion of EV charging infrastructure across the country.
A total of 4,874 new EV chargers will soon be installed under the PM E-Drive scheme, with a budget allocation of Rs 503.86 crore.
The new chargers will be spread across states, including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Government-owned fuel companies such as HPCL, IOCL, and BPCL have been authorised to set up the charging stations.
One of the biggest concerns among EV buyers in India has been charging accessibility.
With thousands of new charging stations planned across the country, the government hopes to make EV ownership easier and more practical for buyers.
Better charging infrastructure could especially help people considering electric two-wheelers, cars, buses, and commercial vehicles.
As charging points become more common in cities and highways, range anxiety may reduce significantly.

Union Minister of Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy announced the new approvals during the National EV Charging Conference in Bengaluru.
Out of the total chargers approved, 1,243 charging stations will be installed in Karnataka alone.
The project for Karnataka is estimated to cost around Rs 123.26 crore.
The chargers will support multiple EV categories, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks.
The charging rollout is part of the government’s larger PM E-Drive scheme, which has a total financial outlay of Rs 10,900 crore.
The scheme aims to strengthen India’s EV ecosystem and encourage faster adoption of electric mobility.
The government is also developing a new app called Unified Bharat e-Charge (UBC).
The app is expected to allow EV users to find, access, and pay for chargers across different charging networks using a single platform.
According to Kumaraswamy, the upcoming platform could have a “UPI-like impact” for EV users in India.
The app aims to make charging more convenient and improve the overall ownership experience.
The government also revealed that under the earlier FAME-II scheme, oil companies had already installed 8,932 EV chargers across the country.
Subsidies worth Rs 873.5 crore were provided for those installations.
With the latest rollout, India’s charging network is expected to grow even faster over the next few years.
