Hyundai's New Electric SUV Could Get These Big Updates

Hyundai's new electric SUV could be called Ioniq P. It may get two battery pack options and Level 2 ADAS. The SUV will be made in India and rival the Nexon EV.

Hyundai is preparing to launch a new compact electric SUV developed specifically for the Indian market. Currently known by its codename HE1i, the upcoming model could be called the Ioniq P. The company recently mentioned this name during an earnings call and has also filed a trademark application in India. The new electric SUV is expected to make its debut next month. It will sit below the Creta Electric and could become Hyundai's most affordable electric vehicle in India. Here are some key updates expected from the upcoming model.

1. New Boxy Design

Recent spy shots suggest that Hyundai's new electric SUV will get a boxy design with an upright front section and a nearly flat roofline. It will have a different look from the more rounded Creta Electric. The front is expected to feature slim LED daytime running lights placed above the main headlamps. Other visible details include roof rails, short overhangs and dual-tone alloy wheels. The new model will be developed as a standalone electric SUV rather than an electric version of an existing petrol or diesel car.

2. Two Battery Pack Options

The upcoming electric SUV is expected to be offered with two battery pack options, likely covering standard-range and long-range versions. It will use Hyundai's E-GMP (K) platform, which also underpins the Hyundai Inster sold in international markets. The global Inster is available with 42kWh and 49kWh battery options. The India-spec model could also share a battery pack with the recently introduced Kia Syros EV. However, Hyundai has not confirmed the battery capacity or driving range yet.

3. New Infotainment System and Level 2 ADAS

Hyundai has already confirmed that the India-specific electric SUV will get a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 ADAS. Both technologies were announced during the company's 2026 CEO Investor Day. More details about the screen size, connected car features and safety technology are expected to be revealed at the debut.

4. Made in India for Local and Global Markets

The new electric SUV will be manufactured at Hyundai's plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The company is also focusing on local development and sourcing of components to keep the vehicle competitively priced. Initially, it is expected to use imported battery cells from Svolt due to delays at Exide Industries' domestic cell manufacturing facility. Hyundai plans to use locally made Exide cells at a later stage.

5. New Rival for Tata Nexon EV and Kia Syros EV

The upcoming Hyundai electric SUV will sit below the Creta Electric and target the mass-market compact EV segment. Its key rivals will include the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV. Hyundai is expected to reveal more details about the SUV, including its battery, range and features, at its debut next month. Prices are likely to be announced soon after. The new model will also play an important role in Hyundai's EV plans. The company aims to increase the share of electric vehicles in its domestic sales to more than 7 per cent within the next year, compared to around 1 per cent in FY26.
