Pajero may return with ladder-frame setup Diesel + hybrid options expected Big off-road SUV comeback in 2026
Mitsubishi is gearing up to bring back one of its most iconic SUVs. The brand is working on a new off-roader expected to debut in 2026, and it is widely believed to be the return of the Mitsubishi Pajero.
While the company has not officially confirmed the name, it has described the upcoming model as a “true cross-country SUV”, hinting at a strong focus on off-road performance.

In a time when many SUVs are shifting to monocoque platforms, Mitsubishi is expected to go the other way. The new Pajero will likely use a body-on-frame (ladder-frame) chassis, making it more rugged and durable.
It is also expected to share its platform with the Mitsubishi Triton, which is known for its tough build and off-road ability. This setup should help the SUV handle rough terrains with ease.
The new Pajero is likely to be powered by a 2.4-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, which will be the main option for most markets.
Alongside this, Mitsubishi may also introduce a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version in select regions. This will offer a mix of performance and better fuel efficiency.
An updated Super Select 4WD system is also expected, improving traction and control in challenging driving conditions.
The upcoming SUV is expected to have a muscular and upright stance, staying true to its rugged roots. It could feature a bold grille, squared design elements, and strong body cladding.
On the inside, the new Pajero is likely to get a major upgrade with:
These updates will bring the SUV in line with modern expectations while keeping its tough character intact.

Mitsubishi’s presence in India has been limited in recent years. The return of a flagship SUV like the Pajero could help the brand regain attention in the market.
However, there is no official confirmation yet about its India launch. If introduced, it could take on popular premium SUVs in the segment.
