Japanese automaker, Toyota is getting aggressive with its product strategy for the Indian market. The company is working on multiple new models, including the new-gen Hilux lifestyle pickup and the next-gen Fortuner. Adding to it, Toyota is testing a new 7-seater derivative of the Hyryder SUV which is likely to be launched before the end of this year. Moreover, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder will soon receive a mid-life update.
The spy images reveal that the new Fortuner comes with an aggressive front design and features Toyota’s new design language, which we have already seen on some of its bigger SUVs on sale in global markets. Its front design is inspired by the new Hilux and the 4Runner SUV, featuring slimmer LED headlights connected by a trim piece that is likely to house ‘TOYOTA’ lettering. Other design highlights include a new honeycomb-patterned grille, new lower bumper with new air intakes and muscular skid plate, a 360-degree camera, squared-off rear profile, new tail-lamp and tailgate design.
The next-gen Toyota Fortuner is likely to be based on the brand’s IMV platform that also underpins the Hilux. The India-spec next-gen Toyota Fortuner is likely to be offered with the familiar 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo diesel engine with an integrated starter generator. This engine produces 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, and its mild-hybrid unit is expected to add another 14bhp and 64Nm. Its petrol version is expected to get a 2.7-litre engine paired to an automatic gearbox.
The new 7-seater Hyryder will be based on the modified version of the Suzuki Global-C platform, which is likely to offer a longer wheelbase. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7XO. The spy images reveal that the SUV has an extended body and rear overhangs to accommodate third-row of seats. It will come with high-end features like LEVEL 2 ADAS, powered tailgate, branded sound system and others. The three-row SUV is likely to be offered with the 1.5L mild-hybrid petrol and 1.5L strong hybrid powertrains. Moreover, the SUV will also receive an AWD drivetrain.
This mid-sized SUV is likely to share new-age features with the Maruti Suzuki Victoris. It will come with LEVEL-2 ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, auto high-beam and others. Other changes will include a bigger 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, an 8-speaker infinity sound system with Dolby Atmos, and an 8-way powered driver’s seat. The CNG version is expected to get the underbody CNG tank, which will free up space to carry more luggage. It will continue to be offered with the existing 1.5L petrol and 1.5L hybrid engine.
