The long-awaited Mahindra Thar 5-door lifestyle SUV has finally been launched in our market. The Thar 5-door SUV is available in the price bracket of Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Prices of the Thar diesel 4x4 will be released in October, while deliveries for the remaining variants are expected to commence in September 2024.
The new Thar Roxx 5-door is significantly bigger than the 3-door Thar, resulting in more space inside the cabin and a bigger boot space. The SUV's wheelbase is increased by over 400mm and length is increased by 443mm, which allows Mahindra to add rear doors to access second-row seats. In fact, the SUV has received more features than its Mahindra Thar 3-door sibling.
The upcoming Thar 5-door is packed with many features that the 3-door version lacks. Some of the noteworthy features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, a dashcam with front & rear monitoring functions, individual armrests for both driver & front passenger, rear air conditioning vents, a panoramic sunroof, leatherette seat upholstery, ventilated front seats and rear centre armrest.
Safety-wise, it gets six airbags, TPMS, front & rear parking sensors, rear camera, 3-point seat belt for all seats, auto-dimming IRVM, ESC, ABS with EBD, engine drag torque control, vehicle dynamics control, hill hold control, hill descent control, hydraulic brake assist, traction control system, roll over mitigation, brake locking differential and brake disc wiping.
The SUV also gets surround view camera and electric park brake with auto hold. Adding to it, the Thar 5-door has Level 2 ADAS tech with features like autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, smart pilot assist, auto high beam and traffic sign recognition.
The Thar 5-door is available with two engine options - a 2.0L turbo petrol direct injection and a 2.2L mHawk turbo diesel. The petrol engine produces 2 states of tunes - 160hp/330Nm and 174hp/380Nm. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.
The diesel engine is tuned to produce two states of tunes - 150hp/330Nm and 172hp/330Nm. Transmission options include 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic, while both RWD and 4x4 drivetrain options are on offer.
The SUV is based on the modified 3G platform, which is the same ladder-frame chassis that underpins the Scorpio-N. Not just the architecture, the SUV shares the suspension setup with the Scorpio-N. It gets independent front suspension & watt's linkage type suspension at the rear along with frequency dependent damping.
