Maruti & Hyundai Plan MPVs For India – Affordable Family Cars

Maruti Suzuki plans a new sub4m MPV by 2028-29. Hyundai to enter MPV segment with Stargazer-based model.

The Indian MPV segment witnessed strong growth in FY2026, registering total sales of 4,79,389 units and a 7.3% YoY growth. Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the segment with models like the Ertiga, XL6 and Invicto, followed by Toyota (Innova Hycross + Innova Crysta) and Kia (Carens + Carens Clavis). Aiming to maintain its leadership, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch a new sub-4 metre MPV, which is expected to arrive in 2028-29.

Interestingly, Hyundai Motor India has also announced its plan to enter the growing MPV market in the coming years. While the carmaker hasn’t revealed the model’s name and details yet, it’s expected to be based on the Hyundai Stargazer, currently sold in Indonesia.

Here’s a brief on these upcoming Maruti and Hyundai MPVs.

Maruti Subcompact MPV

Codenamed YVF, the new Maruti subcompact MPV will be inspired by the Suzuki Solio that’s already on sale in Japan. Dimensionally, it’s expected to be smaller than the Renault Triber and Nissan Gravite. Similar to the Japan-spec Solio, the new Maruti MPV is expected to measure 3,810mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,745mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,480mm. It could be offered with feature such as powered sliding rear doors.

Globally, the Suzuki Solio is offered with a 1.2L, three-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain, promising a fuel efficiency of 22kmph (on the WLTC test cycle). The India-bound model is expected to feature the brand’s new in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain.

New Hyundai MPV

Hyundai has confirmed that its upcoming new MPV will be positioned as a “family mover”, providing mobility for all. This suggest that the model could be priced under Rs 20 lakh, attracting a wider audience. The Hyundai Stargazer, designed and developed for emerging markets, measures 4.4 metes in length and come in both 6 and 7-seats configurations.

Powering the Stargazer is a 1.5L, four-cylinder petrol engine, pushing out power worth 115PS and 144Nm of torque. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or an iVT gearbox.
