It’s surely a great news for the vintage car enthusiasts! The Government of India has introduced a new rule under which the classic and vintage cars, which are 50 years and older can be imported licence-free. This means enthusiasts are now allowed to import vintage vehicles manufactured up to 1975. As per the previous rules, only cars built before 1950 were allowed to import in the country.
The rolling eligibility will continue year after year, thus making it easier for customers to drive in their favourite vintage or classic cars home. That means enthusiasts can import the vehicles manufactured up to 1975 in 2025, vehicles from 1976 in 2026 and so on. It’s important to note that the actual age of the vehicles will be determined by the original date of registration from their first sale.
Important Things:
- As mentioned above, under the new rule, there will be no licence fee on the vintage or classic cars. However, customers will need to pay other charges including heavy customs duty of around 250 percent, GST and more.
- Another key point is that the Directorate General of Foreign Trade prohibits the resale of these imported vintage vehicles in the Indian market.
- The DGFT also states that these vehicles will come under a 5-year no-sales rule in the future if dealers do not comply. This obligation ensures that vintage cars remain within the collector community.
- Enthusiasts or anyone who want to purchase vintage or classic cars will not require special import license.
With the new norms importing vintage cars has become easier, customers need to ensure that their vehicles meet The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 & The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. These vehicles will also comply with the emission regulations.
This new car import policy is likely to enhance the vintage car restoration industry in the country. It will also open new opportunities for workshops specializing in classic car detailing, engine rebuilds and upholstery restoration.
