Diesel engines and SUVs have always gone hand in hand as these engines are known for been powerful and providing a low-end torque. People who like to travel or have to travel frequently through interstate highways tend to prefer diesel-powered engines. Ever since the introduction of the BS6 Phase 2 emissions norms in the automobile industry in India, automakers have reconsidered the need for diesel powertrains. It is all because the new norms press down significantly on diesel engine emissions.
For a much better fuel efficiency and quicker acceleration, diesel SUVs are among the popular choices in India. Considering how 97% of Toyota Fortuner's sales come from the diesel variant, we can be certain that the diesel engine to rule the SUV segment in upcoming years.

On almost the same range as Hyundai Venue, the Tata Nexon diesel provide a mileage of around 23.3 kmpl in the manual one and 24 kmpl with the automatic transmission. We can say that Tata played it pretty smart when it comes to dealing with RDE norms by the use of a Passive Selective Catalytic Reduction that save up on costs and make the engine meet the emission norms as well.

Just like the Kia Seltos model, the Sonet also gets a 6-speed automatic transmission and also iMT in place of a manual gearbox. Yet, like the Hyundai one, it gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine which is really good for 115hp and 250Nm. The automatic diesel variant seems to be delivering a range of about 19-21 kmpl.

What makes Hyundai Creta undoubtedly a popular choice among consumers in India is its premium features and a nice driving experience. The Creta too comes with a 1.5L diesel engine with smooth handling and road manners. Consumers get about 19.8 kmpl from the diesel variant for their overall driving and use. It is an affordable luxury with features, design and mileage for the consumers.

The Neo is more targeted at urban/city users, it is based on the same platform as the Mahindra Bolero but with much more comfort than the standard one. The engine is powered by a 1.5-litre engine of Mahindra that provides about 100hp and 260Nm. Even though it has a gearbox with 5-speed, the Bolero Neo does offer an efficiency of 18 kmpl. This ride is great for the everyday driving need one has for city use.

On the list, this is another Tata model, the Harrier variant shares the same powertrain with Safari. After Nexon, Tata Harrier is an efficient variant of diesel SUV that offers about 16.3 kmpl with the manual gearbox model and 14.6 kmpl with the automatic one. Tata plays a strong game with its diesel SUV range in India. Among these, Tata Harrier is one of the most efficient SUVs in the automobile market.

Next one up is Tata Safari with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that could produce 170hp and 350Nm and comes in both manual and automatic gearbox. The Safari variant is the lowest fuel-efficient Tata diesel SUV, but still better than half of the others with a range of 16.14 kmpl in manual and about 14.08 kmpl from the automatic variant. This thoroughly makes sense when considering that Safari is also one of the largest SUVs as well.

The XUV700 is no doubt one of the most sought-after cars in India which is available in the Adrenox and MX trims. The SUV is not only one of the fuel-efficient diesel SUVs in India but also offers a thrilling and reliable driving experience.
