Kia India is gearing up to introduce its first electric MPV, the Carens EV, by mid-2025. Competing against the MG Windsor EV and the recently launched BYD eMax 7, the Carens EV is set to expand Kia’s electric vehicle offerings and strengthen its position in India’s growing EV market.
Built on a modified K2 platform—also used for Hyundai's upcoming Creta EV—this electric MPV merges familiar Carens ICE design with distinct EV-specific elements. A sleek, closed front grille inspired by Kia’s flagship EV9, reimagined front and rear bumpers, revised headlamps and newly designed alloy wheels add a modernised touch. Recent test mules spotted in India also indicate a specialised suspension setup, tailored to handle the added weight and dynamics of an EV.
Inside, the electric MPV is likely to offer a digital driver’s display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated front seats, and an electric sunroof. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features such as autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane assist may also be included. Safety equipment is expected to include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control and hill-hold assist.
Powering the Carens EV could be a 45kWh battery pack paired with a front-axle-mounted electric motor, similar to the expected setup in the Creta EV. Generating up to 136bhp and 255Nm of torque, this powertrain configuration could give the Carens EV an estimated range of 450 km on a single charge.
Its debut is expected at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025, with a market launch expected by mid-year. Kia will target a price point under Rs 20 lakh, intending to make the Carens EV a competitive choice for Indian families seeking a practical, eco-friendly vehicle.
Alongside the Carens EV, Kia will release an updated ICE version of the Carens MPV in mid-2025, aimed at strengthening its position against the Maruti Ertiga. This refreshed model will feature cosmetic enhancements and new interior features, adding further value to the Carens' lineup.
