Toyota Fortuner Flex Fuel Concept Unveiled; India Launch Possible

Toyota has unveiled the Fortuner Flex Fuel concept in Indonesia. The SUV runs on a 100% bioethanol-compatible engine. An India launch could happen in the future.

Toyota has showcased the Fortuner Flex Fuel Concept at the 2026 Indonesia Motor Show, giving a closer look at how its popular SUV could run on cleaner fuel in the future. Alongside the Flex Fuel version, the company also displayed a B50 biodiesel-powered Fortuner.

Both models are still concept vehicles and are not yet in mass production. However, with India pushing the use of ethanol-blended fuels, the Toyota Fortuner Flex Fuel could eventually make its way to the Indian market.

Runs on 100% Bioethanol Fuel

The biggest change in the Toyota Fortuner Flex Fuel is under the bonnet. The SUV uses a 2.7-litre petrol engine that has been modified to run on 100% bioethanol (E100). To support the new fuel, Toyota has updated several engine components, including the fuel lines, hose pipes, engine head and other related parts. The engine produces 161 bhp and 243 Nm of torque and sends power to the rear wheels. Apart from the new powertrain, the overall design and features remain similar to the regular Fortuner.

Biodiesel Version Also on Display

Toyota also showcased a B50 biodiesel version of the Fortuner at the same event. This model continues to use the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine with an all-wheel-drive system. It develops 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque and also gets a 48V mild-hybrid system, which is expected to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

India Launch Could Be on the Cards

Toyota has not announced production plans or a launch timeline for either concept. However, the company is continuing to test both vehicles. With India encouraging the use of cleaner fuels and expanding ethanol infrastructure, the Toyota Fortuner Flex Fuel could be a suitable option for the market. Reports suggest that an India launch is possible if the ongoing pilot projects deliver positive results.

Toyota Expands Its Alternative Fuel Strategy

Toyota has been investing in different fuel technologies instead of relying only on battery-electric vehicles. The company already offers strong hybrid models in several markets and is also working on hydrogen and flex-fuel technologies. The Toyota Fortuner Flex Fuel Concept shows that the company is exploring more fuel options for popular SUVs. If it reaches production, it could offer more environmentally friendly alternative without changing the Fortuner's familiar design and driving experience.
