Toyota will launch the next-gen Fortuner in 2027 Next-gen Kia Sonet testing begins, launch in early 2027
Two of India’s high-selling SUVs are gearing up for generation changes. Toyota and Kia India are developing the next-generation Toyota Fortuner and the Next-gen Kia Sonet. While Toyota focuses on introducing new technology and luxury cabin updates to maintain its dominance in the full-size 7-seater segment, Kia is shifting the Sonet to an advanced platform to solve the rear-seat legroom limitations. Moreover, the newer platform will allow Kia to experiment with electrified versions of the SUV in future.
Expected Launch: 2027
Expected Price Range: 40 lakh - 55 lakh (ex-showroom)
It will continue to be based on the ladder-frame platform that also underpins the new Hilux. The next-gen Fortuner will retain its boxy stance while adopting Toyota’s global design language. It will have a flatter bonnet, wider front grille, split LED headlights, pronounced bumpers, squared-off wheel arches, flatter roofline and a squared-off rear profile with a connected rear LED light bar.
Powertrain & Mild-Hybrid Tech: it will continue to be powered by the tried & tested 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, paired with Toyota’s 48V mild-hybrid setup to improve fuel economy and low-speed acceleration. Both 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes will be offered alongside 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains. It is also expected to get the 2.0L gasoline engine.
Interior Overhaul: inside the cabin, the SUV gets dual 12.3-inch displays for infotainment and digital instrument console, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and powered front seats, a 360-degree surround view camera, and an electronic parking brake. For safety and security, the next Fortuner will finally get LEVEL 2 ADAS suite with active features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking and others.

Expected Launch: early 2027
Expected Price Range: Rs 8 lakh - Rs 15.50 lakh
Codenamed QY2E, the second-generation Kia Sonet is currently undergoing extensive road testing before arriving in early 2027. The SUV will move from the older platform to the newer K1 architecture shared with the Kia Syros.
Addressing Rear Knee Room: the current model has crossover/coupe styling, and has cramped space in the second row. Thanks to the new platform, the wheelbase will be extended by roughly 20mm. By doing this Kia directly resolves rear-seat legroom constraints, providing better knee and shoulder space for passengers.
Tech & Features: it will have a dual 12.3-inch curved digital screen setup comprising an infotainment unit and a driver’s display, which also supports over-the-air (OTA) updates. It will also get an enhanced safety with radar-and-camera based LEVEL 2 ADAS suite.
Engine Lineup: the next Sonet is likely to be offered with a 1.2L naturally-aspirated petrol, a 1.0L Turbo-GDi petrol, and a 1.5L diesel engine. A strong-hybrid variant is also in development for a later release.
