Next-gen Kia Sonet gets new design, platform and ADAS. Strong hybrid version is expected to join the lineup by 2028-29.
The second-generation Kia Sonet is currently undergoing testing, and is expected to arrive towards the end of 2027. Internally codenamed QY2E, the subcompact SUV is likely to receive comprehensive design changes and significant feature enhancements, while retaining its existing engine setup. According to reports, the all-new Sonet will receive a new strong hybrid powertrain in 2028 or 2029.
The spied test mule was heavily camouflaged, concealing most of its design details. However, the front fascia was partially visible, showcasing a smaller front grille with honeycomb-patterned element, a new split-style LED headlamp with boomerang-shaped LED DRLs (daytime running lights) and a revised bumper.
The test mule was also equipped with the newly-designed alloy wheels as we have seen in the new Kia Seltos along with pronounced wheel arches, disc brakes on both ends, cladding on the lower section of the doors, pull-type door handles and flush-style roof rails. At the back, the new Kia Sonet is expected to feature slimmer taillamps connected by a light bar along with a redesigned bumper.
Spy shots suggest that the new 2027 Kia Sonet is likely to come with a curved dual 12.3-inch displays, borrowed from the Kia Syros. The subcompact SUV could also be offered with Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) suite. Existing features such as a 360-degree camera with blind view monitor, wireless charger, air purifier, auto dimming IRVM, ambient lightings, 4-way powered driver’s seat, cruise control, front ventilated seats, electric sunroof are likely to be carried forward.
The next-generation Kia Sonet will be built on the brand’s new and safer K2 platform, which also underpins the Syros SUV. The new architecture, featuring a longer wheelbase, is expected to improve rear seat space, one of the shortcomings of the current-generation Sonet. Kia also aims to achieve a 5-star BNCAP (Bharat New Car Assessment Program) safety rating.
Initially, the 2027 Kia Sonet is expected to be offered with the existing 82bhp, 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol, 120hp 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and 116hp 1.5-litre diesel engine options. Both manual and automatic transmission will continue to be on offer.
A strong hybrid variant will join the lineup at a later stage. Kia might use an electrified version of the 1.5L petrol engine, which is expected to debut in the next-generation Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in 2027.
With significant design changes and feature upgrades, the all-new Sonet is expected to witness a price increase. Currently, the subcompact SUV lineup is available within the price range of Rs 7.34 lakh to Rs 14.09 lakh (ex-showroom).
In the highly competitive sub-4 metre SUV segment, the new Sonet will continue to take on the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
