Jeep to launch Sierra-based SUV in India by 2028 It will rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos
Stellantis-owned American bra nd Jeep is preparing a brand-new midsize SUV for emerging markets like India. Jeep is co-developing this midsize SUV directly on Tata Motors’ ARGOS platform that also underpins the Tata Sierra. Targeting the Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh price bracket, this strategic partnership allows Jeep to enter India’s high-volume C-SUV category. It will directly against segment leaders like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and others.
Stellantis and Tata Motors has formally signed a technology-licensing agreement. The homegrown automaker will retain ownership of the newly developed architecture while licensing it to jeep for its localised C-SUV program.
The ARGOS architecture is engineered to support different powertrains, including ICE (Petrol/Diesel), Hybrids, and Dual-Cylinder CNG. This platform is optimised for vehicles measuring between 4.3 metres and 4.6 metres in length. By using a locally produced platform at the Ranjangaon facility in Maharashtra, Jeep can avoid expensive global development cycles and achieve aggressive price points in India.
The upcoming midsize SUV will come with 4x4 or AWD drivetrain. The ARGOS platform accommodates all-wheel-drive (AWD) hardware. The American automaker is developing an optional 4x4 variant, using mechanical 4WD or ICE trims or dual-motor electric AWD setup for the EV iteration. The suspension, approach/departure angles, and terrain modes will be engineered by Jeep’s engineering team in Pune.
The upcoming Jeep midsize SUV is likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre Hyperion direct-injection turbo-petrol engine that produces 156 bhp and 255 Nm of torque. The diesel version could get a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission choices likely to include a 6- speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
The Jeep SUV will have different exterior sheet metal, signature 7-slot front grille, and a redesigned dashboard architecture. It will be packed with a panoramic sunroof, dual 10.25-inch digital screens, LEVEL 2 ADAS.
The American automaker, Jeep is targeting a price tag of Rs 15 lakh (on-road) for the upcoming mid-size SUV. Stellantis plans to manufacture RHD and LHD variants of the SUV in India for export to over 50 international markets.
