Tata Sierra-Based Jeep Midsize SUV India Launch Timeline and Key Details Out

Tata and Stellantis to co-develop a new midsize Jeep SUV Based on ARGOS platform, the SUV will arrive in first half of 2028

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis have signed a formal agreement to co-develop a new midsize Jeep SUV. The upcoming Jeep midsize SUV will be built on Tata Motors’ ARGOS platform that also underpins the Tata Sierra. Internally codenamed J1J, the upcoming Jeep SUV will mark a significant milestone in the 20-year manufacturing partnership between Tata and Stellantis (Earlier with Fiat). The first vehicle under this program is slated for a market introduction in the first half of 2028.

Key Highlights of the Tata-Jeep J1J Project

Architecture Sharing (ARGOS platform): the upcoming Jeep midsize SUV will be based on Tata’s ARGOS (All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable) multi-energy architecture.

Multi-powertrain versatility: the J1J will be offered with both ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and Electric (EV) powertrains. A Range-Extender Electric Vehicle (REEV) option is also under consideration.

4x4 Capabilities: Both ICE and EV versions of the midsize SUV will offer 4x4 drive systems. It is no secret that Tata Motors will also launch a 4x4 variant of the ICE-powered Tata Sierra.

Distinct Jeep Identity: The SUV will share the structure and platform with the Sierra; however, it will feature an entirely different design, custom interior cabin layout, bespoke seating and brand-specific suspension setup.

Production & Export Hub: The SUV will be produced at the joint-venture Fiat India Automobiles facility in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. The company will also produce the Left-hand-drive versions of the SUV, which will be exported to over 50 global markets.

Strategic and Market Impact

Rebooting Jeep in India: the ARGOS platform will give Jeep an entry point into the high-volume Indian midsize SUV segment, price bracket around Rs 15 lakh to 20 lakh, without the prohibitive costs of developing a standalone localised platform.

Platform Monetisation for Tata: the homegrown automaker retains ownership of the ARGOS platform, licensing it to Stellantis. This generates licensing revenue for Tata while scaling component sourcing volume across both OEMs to reduce overall unit costs.
