Tata Kuno EV to launch in 2027-28 To be positioned between Nexon EV and Sierra EV
Tata Motors has an ambitious plan for the Indian automotive industry. The homegrown automaker aims to expand its product portfolio by introducing six new nameplates over the next five years, including the already launched Sierra SUV. Tata Motors’ premium EV brand, Avinya, will be the next in line, which is slated to arrive early next year. Apart from this, the carmaker will update its existing lineup with multiple facelifts, feature additions, powertrain updates and new derivatives across the range.
In the EV segment, Tata Motors is developing a new midsize SUV, which is expected to be introduced in 2027 or 2028. Codenamed Tata Kuno, the new electric SUV will measure nearly 4.3 metres in length and will be positioned against the MG Windsor EV. Tata Motors’ Sanand manufacturing facility in Gujarat will serve as production hub for the Tata Kuno EV.
While official details of the Kuno EV are still under wraps, here’s what we know so far about the upcoming model.
The Tata Kuno EV is expected to feature the brand’s new design language and offer a spacious while being underpinned by the Acti.ev (Advanced Connected Tech Intelligent Electric Vehicle) platform. It’s a pure EV architecture that supports both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrains. It has been designed to maximise space and energy efficiency. The platform is scalable and supports different vehicle sizes, battery pack capacities, charging capabilities and drivetrain configruations.
Tata’s Activ.ev architecture also supports front-wheel-drive (FWD), rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive AWD) configurations. The upcoming EVs based on this platform are claimed to offer a range of up to 600km on a single charge. The architecture also supports 11kW of AC charging and DC fast charging of up to 150kW.
When it comes to powertrain, the upcoming Tata Kuno EV is expected to share its powertrain options with either the Tata Curvv EV or the Tata Sierra EV. The Curvv EV is currently available with a 55kWh battery pack paired with a single electric motor and FWD system. Its combined output stands at 167PS and 215Nm. The EV delivers a claimed range of up to 502km.
Meanwhile, the Tata Sierra EV is offered with 63kWh and 75kWh battery pack options along with single and dual-motor options. The dual-motor AWD version delivers a maximum power of 306PS and 504Nm of torque. The Sierra EV 63kWh FWD, 75kWh RWD and 75kWh AWD versions offer a claimed range of 565km, 665km and 624km, respectively.
As far as pricing is concerned, the Tata Kuno EV could be priced competitively against the MG Windsor EV, which is currently available in the price range of Rs 14.85 lakh – Rs 19.15 lakh (ex-showroom). Its prices are likely to overlap with select variants of the Tata Curvv EV and Tata Sierra EV, which are priced between Rs 17.19 lakh – Rs 19.39 lakh and Rs 18.79 lakh – Rs 25.99 lakh (all, ex-showroom).
