Car manufacturers in India have released their sales numbers for the month of August 2025. This time, the automotive market in India showed a mixed picture with several brands posted negative sales growth. However, the strong sales of SUVs and a few key models helped to stabilise the market.
MG Motor India posted a massive YoY sales growth of 52 percent with 6578 units sold in August 2025. The Windsor EV was the brand’s top-seller. Toyota posted a double digital growth in August, reporting a YoY sales growth of 11%. Mahindra reported a YoY sales decline of 9 percent in the month of August 2025. The brand's SUV sales dip below 40,000 mark.
Maruti Suzuki was the best-selling car manufacturer in July 2025, with 1.37 units sold. Mahindra beats Hyundai to second position, and reported a YoY sales growth of 20%. The Korean brand reported a YoY decline of 10 percent, while Tata Motors slipped to 4th position and reported a YoY sales decline of 10 percent. Toyota and Kia were at 5th and 6th position, respectively.

Maruti Suzuki has reported a YoY sales decline of 8 percent in the month of August 2025. The company sold a total of 131,278 passenger cars last month as against 143,075 units in August 2024. The company will launch an all-new mid-sized SUV, rumoured to be called Victoris on September 3, 2025. It will be a new flagship SUV from ARENA dealership network and will sit between the Brezza and Grand Vitara in Maruti Suzuki line-up.
Hyundai Motor India has achieved a total monthly sales of 60,501 units, both domestic and exports, in August 2025. In the domestic market, the company sold a total of 44,001 units. This is huge, as the Korean brand finally regained the second position in terms of sales in the month of August 2025. The company beats Mahindra and Tata Motors to become second largest car manufacturer in August 2025.
Hyundai has exported 16,500 units last month. In fact, the company exported a total of 1,18,840 vehicles during Jan-Aug 2025.
Tata Motors has sold a total of 41,001 passenger vehicles in the month of August 2025, registering a YoY sales decline of 7 percent. The company had sold 44,142 units in the same month last year.
However, the brand’s international business volumes/ exports increased over sevenfold to 2,314 units. The company has recorded an impressive EV sales numbers in August 2025. Domestic + exports, combined EV sales hitting a record 8,540 units, registering a YoY increase of 44 percent.
In fact, Tata Motors recorded a total retail sales of 7,088 EVs in August 2025 (Vahan Portal Numbers). The company currently has a 40.9% market share in the passenger electric vehicle segment. In the same month last year, Tata delivered 4,390 passenger EVs.
After a successful first 7 months, Mahindra has witnessed a decline in sales in the month of August 2025. The company sold a total of 39,399 SUVs as against 43,277 units in the same month last year, reporting a YoY sales decline of 9 percent.
In the electric vehicle space, Mahindra sold a total of 3,495 electric SUVs in August 2025. The company reported a massive YoY EV sales increase of 937%, as it sold only 337 units a year ago.
JSW MG Motor India has reported a total sales of 6578 units in the month of August 2025. The company reported a massive Year-on-Year sales growth of 52%. In the same month last year, MG sold 4,323 vehicles in the Indian market. The company claims that the festive season boosted sales across MG’s car lineup.
Both ICE and EV models contributed to the rising sales of MG in India. The MG Windsor EV once again become the top-seller for the brand, and reported its highest ever sales, a 5% month-on-month increase. MG’s smallest EV, the Comet has also registered an impressive 21% growth over July 2025.
A double digit growth! Toyota has reported a Year-on-Year sales growth of 11 percent in August 2025. The company sold a total of 34,236 vehicles in August 2025 as against 30,879 units in the same month last year.
In the domestic market, the company sold a total of 29,302 vehicles in August 2025 as against 28,589 units in the same month last year. The company a YoY sales growth of 2.49 percent and a marginal MoM sales growth of 0.49 percent.
Commenting on the sales, Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, TKM, said: “We sold 29,302 units in August 2025, maintaining our steady presence in the market and are encouraged by the continued trust customers place in our cars and services. September will be an important phase for the industry overall, and we will closely observe market trends as they unfold. At Toyota, our focus remains on innovating and introducing value-added services through the festive season, with the hope of uplifting customer sentiment and making purchase decisions easier and more joyful.”
Honda Cars India has sold a total of 6,774 cars in August 2025. In the domestic market, the company sold 3,850 cars, while exports account for 2,924 units.
Commenting on the sales, Kunal Behl, VP, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India, said, “The market demand owing to Onam festivities was quite strong and boosted our deliveries specially in Kerala and neighbouring states. In view of the ongoing speculations for potential GST rate changes, we followed a cautious approach towards factory despatches in August to align the inventory as per market situation. Early clarity on GST will be crucial to maintain buying momentum, and possible reduction will surely boost auto sales during festive buying season. We are fully prepared to meet the anticipated demand and look forward to serving our customers with enhanced value and satisfaction.”

Tata Motors tops the chart with 7,080 EVs sold in August 2025 as against 4,390 units in the same month last year. The company reported a YoY sales increase of 61 percent. Tata holds a market share of 40.98% in the EV category of India.
JSW MG Motor India is at the 2nd position with 4,759 EVs sold in August 2025 compared to 1437 units a year before, reporting a massive YoY sales increase of 231%.
Mahindra is currently selling 3 EVs - XUV 400, BE 6 and XEV 9e, and the latest duo are in heavy demand. The company sold 3,495 EVs in August 2025 as against 337 units in the same month last year, registering a massive 937% sales growth.
Hyundai sold 584 EVs in August 2025, while BYD India and Kia India records 447 and 441 EV sales, respectively.
Chinese automaker, BYD beats Tesla in the European electric vehicle sales for the first time. BYD registered 13503 new cars across Europe, including the UK and EFTA markets in July 2025. The company reported a massive 225 percent increase in registration of new cars compared with the same month last year. Talking about Tesla, the American EV maker only registered 8837 new cars in Europe. The company reported a YoY sales decline of 40 percent.
