New Honda sub-4m SUV to launch by 2028. It will be based on an all-new platform. Both petrol and hybrid versions could be launched.
Honda Cars India is preparing to enter the electric vehicle space with the new 0 Alpha concept based SUV. Set to be launched by the end of this financial year, the new electric SUV will challenge the Tata Sierra EV, Hyundai Creta Electric and others. Adding to it, the company is preparing to re-enter the high-volume sub-4 metre SUV space with an all-new model engineered specifically for local market conditions and buyer expectations.
This compact SUV set to be the brand’s most important product, as it could help Honda Cars India to regain lost market share. In the recent years, we have seen SUVs dominating the market. Buyers are now ready to pay extra to drive home an SUV, which has larger screens, panoramic sunroofs, and feature-loaded cabins. Not just Honda, Volkswagen and Renault will also launch their respective new sub-4 meter SUVs in 2027. Moreover, Mahindra has planned to launch two new sub-4 meter SUVs based on the Vision S and Vision X concepts.
Honda has officially announced to launch the new sub-4 meter SUV in the country by 2028. The compact SUV will directly rival the established segment leaders including the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
India-specific Platform Strategy: Honda Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe confirmed that rather than adapting a global product, this upcoming Honda compact SUV is being tailored specifically for Indian customers needs to achieve an optimal balance of cost, features, and performance.
Honda is developing a modular platform, internally codenamed PF2, for its future small and midsize models. If media reports are to be believed, an all-new 3-row SUV, next-gen City sedan and a sub-4 meter SUV will be based on the PF2 architecture. It will be a hybrid-ready architecture and is reportedly to be around 90kg lighter than the Honda’s existing hybrid platform.
WR-V Replacement: This compact SUV will mark Honda’s return to the sub-4m space since the WR-V was phased out. The new compact SUV forms a crucial element of Honda’s broader push to introduce 10 new models in India by 2030.
Expected Engine Options: the new Honda compact SUV is likely to be powered by Honda’s localised 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated i-VTEC petrol engine paired with manual and CVT automatic gearboxes.
Honda is also evaluating the hybrid and electric versions of the compact SUV. These powertrains will be required in future to meet tightening CAFE emission norms. Honda could use the 1.2L NA petrol engine to develop an all-new hybrid powertrain.
