India to Implement 20% Ethanol Petrol - Key Changes Coming by April 2026

India will soon introduce a major change to its fuel system. Starting from April 1, 2026, the government will require all petrol to be blended with up to 20 percent ethanol and have a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. This move is part of the government’s plan to reduce crude oil imports, lower emissions, and support farmers by increasing demand for ethanol.

What is Ethanol Petrol?

Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from crops like sugarcane, maize, and other grains. It burns cleaner than regular petrol, helping reduce carbon emissions. Ethanol has a high octane rating, which helps improve engine performance and prevent knocking (uneven combustion). By blending ethanol with petrol, the fuel becomes more eco-friendly and efficient.

What Does This Change Mean?

Starting in April 2026, all petrol across India will be mixed with up to 20 percent ethanol, with a minimum RON of 95. The government has made this change to help cut down on oil imports and reduce harmful emissions. The mandate will apply to all petrol stations in every state and Union Territory.

Impact on Car Owners

The government has stated that most vehicles built between 2023 and 2025 are designed to run on E20 fuel (which has 20 percent ethanol) without causing major issues. However, vehicles older than this may experience some issues. For example, there may be a slight drop in mileage (about 3-7 percent), and some rubber or plastic components in older cars may wear out faster.

Despite these small challenges, the transition to E20 fuel is expected to be smooth for most drivers, especially for newer vehicles.

Why Is This Important?

India has already blended 10 percent ethanol into petrol ahead of schedule, and now the target has been set for 20 percent by 2026. This initiative helps reduce India’s dependency on imported oil, saving foreign exchange. Since 2014, ethanol blending has already saved India over Rs 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange.

The move also supports farmers by creating more demand for crops used to produce ethanol, providing them with a new source of income.

Benefits for the Environment

Blending ethanol with petrol helps reduce emissions, making it a cleaner alternative to pure petrol. This step will help India move closer to its clean energy goals, improving air quality and supporting the government’s push toward sustainable mobility.
