Mini Defender could get hybrid and electric power. The SUV is expected to sit below the Defender 90. Four-wheel drive and rugged styling could continue.
Land Rover is working on a smaller Defender SUV that could offer both hybrid and fully electric powertrain options. Expected to sit below the Defender 90, the upcoming model could bring a new entry point to the brand's rugged SUV lineup while retaining its signature boxy design and four-wheel-drive capability.
Tentatively known as the Land Rover Defender 100, the new SUV is expected to use JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). While the platform was primarily developed for electric vehicles, its hybrid capability could help the company cater to markets where demand for fully electric vehicles has grown more slowly than expected.
The final name, powertrain specifications and launch timeline have not been officially announced.
The upcoming Defender is expected to measure slightly over 4.5 metres in length, making it more compact than the existing Defender models. Despite its smaller footprint, it could retain the upright proportions and rugged appearance that define the Defender range.
The design is expected to feature a tall body, an upright windscreen, steep glass angles and a high rear section. These elements could help the smaller SUV maintain its distinctive identity while making it easier to drive on narrow roads and in urban areas. Four-wheel drive is also expected to remain a key part of the package, allowing the compact Defender to handle rough roads and off-road trails.

The biggest highlight of the smaller Defender could be its flexible powertrain lineup. JLR's EMA platform was developed mainly for electric vehicles, with the battery positioned beneath the passenger compartment. However, the architecture is also expected to support hybrid propulsion. A fully electric version could use one motor on each axle to deliver four-wheel drive. This setup could provide precise control over the distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels, helping improve traction on loose surfaces.
The hybrid option could make the SUV more practical in markets where charging infrastructure remains limited or buyers are not yet ready to switch to a fully electric vehicle. Offering both powertrain options could also help JLR meet different customer needs across major markets, including the United States and Europe. Battery capacity, electric driving range, hybrid system details and performance figures remain unknown at this stage.
Although the EMA platform could bring modern electric technology to the Defender family, maintaining the SUV's off-road ability will be an important challenge.
The battery mounted beneath the floor could reduce the space available for suspension movement and axle articulation compared with the current Defender models. JLR will need to focus on suspension tuning, wheel control and traction systems to ensure the electric SUV can handle demanding terrain.
Aerodynamics could be another challenge. The Defender's tall roof, upright windscreen and steep rear design are important to its appearance but can create additional drag, potentially affecting the driving range of an electric version. Balancing battery efficiency with rugged styling and off-road performance will therefore be crucial to the development of the new model.
JLR has not confirmed the production name of its upcoming compact Defender. The name Defender Sport has been linked to the project, while Defender 100 is another possible name. If the latter is chosen, it would sit below the Defender 90 in the lineup and could become a more compact alternative for customers who want the brand's styling and off-road character in a smaller package. The EMA platform is also expected to underpin future generations of the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar, making it an important part of JLR's future electrification plans.
The smaller Defender could be an interesting addition to the Indian market, particularly as JLR works to make its SUVs more accessible through local manufacturing. The company has started local assembly of the Defender 110 in India, resulting in price reductions of up to Rs. 34 lakh on select versions. This has lowered the entry cost for customers interested in the iconic SUV.
A smaller Defender could potentially attract a wider audience if it is priced below the existing range. Its compact dimensions, rugged design and possible hybrid and electric powertrains could also make it suitable for a broader range of driving conditions.
However, an India launch, pricing and the final powertrain lineup have not been confirmed. More details about the upcoming SUV are expected as the project progresses.
