Pajero and Montero are officially making a comeback. Mitsubishi plans new SUVs, hybrids and EVs. The first new Pajero could debut later this year.
Mitsubishi is finally stepping back into the spotlight. The Japanese brand has officially confirmed the return of the legendary Pajero and Montero names while also revealing an ambitious roadmap that includes new SUVs, hybrid technology and electric vehicles. For SUV fans, this is one of Mitsubishi's biggest announcements in years.
After years of speculation, Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Pajero is returning.
But there's a twist. The company isn't bringing back just one SUV. Instead, Pajero will become an entire family of SUVs, giving Mitsubishi a stronger presence in multiple segments.
The strategy mirrors what Toyota has done with the Land Cruiser brand, turning a single nameplate into a broader lineup.

The first model from the new Pajero family is expected to make its global debut later this year.
According to reports, it will use the same ladder-frame platform as the latest Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck. That's important because it means the Pajero is expected to remain a proper body-on-frame SUV with genuine off-road capability.
For long-time fans, that's exactly what they wanted to hear.
Mitsubishi hasn't shown the entire SUV yet, but the teaser image provides some clues.
A connected LED light bar stretches across the front, while the overall silhouette appears upright and boxy. The design looks modern, but it still carries the tough SUV proportions that made the Pajero famous around the world.
In other words, Mitsubishi seems to be focusing on evolution rather than reinvention.
The future Pajero lineup isn't expected to rely on traditional engines alone.
Global reports suggest Mitsubishi is working on petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrain options. Hybrid technology could become especially important as emission regulations continue to tighten across major markets.
This would allow Mitsubishi to improve efficiency without sacrificing the performance expected from a large SUV.
The comeback plan goes far beyond a single nameplate.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that it plans to launch 13 new models between FY2026 and FY2031. The roadmap includes SUVs, pickup trucks, hybrid vehicles, electric cars, minivans and kei cars.
Several of these upcoming products are expected to be SUVs, highlighting the company's continued focus on adventure and utility-focused vehicles.
