Indian rally legend Hari Singh, aged 59, has passed away following a tragic speedboat accident in the Maldives. The accident happened late on March 19, 2026, near Felidhoo island, when a speedboat carrying seven people capsized. Industrialist Gautam Singhania and others were rescued with minor injuries, but Singh remained missing for more than 48 hours. On March 22, Maldivian authorities confirmed that his body was found, believed to be trapped within a coral reef.
Hari Singh was a towering figure in Indian rallying. He won the Indian National Rally Championship five times and became the first Indian to secure the Asia Zone Rally Championship. Known as the "Gypsy King," Singh earned his nickname for his unmatched skills in the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy across challenging rally terrains.
After retiring from active racing, he continued to shape the sport as the Head of Operations for JK Tyre Motorsport and as a Chief Instructor for Mercedes-Benz India. Singh was also a mentor, nurturing young talent and helping shape the next generation of Indian racers.
Singh’s death has left a huge void in Indian motorsport. Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow racers, and industry leaders. Former F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan called him a "true legend," highlighting his contributions both on and off the track. His dedication, skill, and mentorship have left an enduring mark on the Indian rallying scene.
