Maruti dominates hatchback sales with Swift, WagonR, and Baleno. Tata Tiago and Altroz see big sales jump. Festive season boosts competition in India’s hatchback market.
Maruti Suzuki continues to rule the hatchback segment in India, with the Swift, WagonR, and Baleno leading the sales chart for September 2025. Despite some ups and downs, the brand’s strong lineup maintained its dominance, while Tata Motors made an impressive comeback with the Tiago and Altroz.
Here’s how the top 10 hatchbacks performed last month.
The Swift is India’s most popular hatchback, selling 15,547 units in September. Even though sales were 4% lower than last year, the Swift remains a favourite for its sporty look, reliable performance, and fuel efficiency.
The WagonR sold 15,388 units, showing 15% growth over last year. Its tall design, spacious cabin, and low running cost make it a favourite for families.
The Baleno came in third with 13,173 units, though sales dropped 8%. It still remains popular in the premium hatchback segment for its comfort and features.
The Tiago had a great month, with sales almost doubling to 8,322 units (97% growth). Its electric version, safety features, and value for money have made it very popular.
The Alto sold 5,434 units, down 37% from last year. Even with the decline, it is still a good choice for budget buyers because of its low price and easy maintenance.
The Altroz sold 4,168 units, a 51% increase thanks to its facelift and festive discounts. It is appreciated for its safety, solid build, and premium feel.
The Glanza saw a small 2% increase, selling 3,299 units. It is basically a Baleno with Toyota reliability and good after-sales service.
The i20 sold 3,230 units, down 12% from last year. It is still popular for its stylish looks, tech features, and comfort.
The Grand i10 Nios saw a 17% drop, selling 3,100 units. Its compact design, smooth engine, and practical features still attract city buyers.
The S-Presso sold 1,774 units, showing 4% growth. Its SUV-like design, low price, and fuel efficiency make it ideal for first-time car buyers.
Maruti Suzuki still dominates the hatchback segment, but Tata Motors is gaining ground with the Tiago and Altroz. With the festive season ongoing, more buyers are expected to make their choices in the coming months.
