Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to position below Fortuner Corolla Cross hybrid SUV to arrive by 2029
Toyota is expanding its utility vehicle footprint in the Indian market by introducing a wide range of new SUVs, including two of its key global models - the rugged Land Cruiser FJ off-roader and the Corolla Cross. Both SUVs will be locally produced at Toyota’s manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra to ensure competitive pricing. Adding to it, the company will launch the next-gen Fortuner, a 7-seater version of the Hyryder, Glanza facelift, Hyryder facelift and an all-new electric MPV in the country.

The new Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be launched in India by 2028. It could be the first product to roll out from Toyota’s upcoming Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra. It will be positioned below the Fortuner in Toyota’s line-up, and will come as a premium alternative to the likes of the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N. It is built on the same ladder-frame chassis, called the IMV, that underpins the Toyota Fortuner and Innova Crysta.
The Land Cruiser FJ is powered by a 2.7-litre, 4-cylinder, petrol engine that produces 166hp and 245Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with sequential shift. The SUV uses a part-time 4WD setup with a rear differential lock. The India-spec model could get a 2.8L turbo diesel engine with a mild-hybrid setup. Moreover, the company is also likely to introduce the strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid version of the Land Cruiser FJ.

Toyota is planning to launch the Corolla Cross SUV in the country by 2029. It will be the first model to roll off its production line from its Bidkin Industrial Area (BIA) Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Internally codenamed as 340D, the new Toyota C-segment SUV will be designed on the TNGA-C platform, which also underpins the Innova Hycross. In global markets, the Corolla Cross is offered with two engine options - a 2.0L, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol and 2.0L strong hybrid.
The naturally-aspirated petrol engine delivers 171 PS and 205 Nm of torque. It comes with a CVT automatic gearbox and FWD (front-wheel-drive) system. The strong hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0L petrol engine and an electric motor, producing a combined power of 196bhp. It is available with an e-CVT gearbox and Electronic On-demand AWD.
