Toyota plans to launch new Fortuner and Corolla Cross based 7-seater SUV in India Land Cruiser FJ to launch by 2028
Toyota is readying its most aggressive product offensive for the Indian market. While the brand has relied on its partnership with Maruti Suzuki for volume by introducing re-badged products, Toyota’s strategy is shifting back to its global DNA—ruggedness, reliability, hybrid efficiency, and premium positioning. The company plans to launch a new low-cost Innova Hycross, an all-electric MPV and multiple new SUVs in the country. Talking about SUVs, the Japanese brand is readying 3 all-new SUVs for the Indian market.
Here is the breakdown of the three big Tata SUVs heading to Indian showrooms.
The king of the full-size SUV segment, the Toyota Fortuner is all set to enter the next generation in nearly a decade. It was speculated to be based on the TNGA-F platform that underpins the Land Cruisers; however, latest reports suggest that Toyota will utilise the modified version of the ladder-frame chassis. It will be more modern and loaded with modern features.
The next Fortuner is expected to be powered by a 2.8L turbo diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This system adds start-stop functionality and offers a torque boost of up to 65Nm. It will share design and interiors with the new Hilux lifestyle pickup. The cabin will likely to feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a fully digital driver’s display, and a comprehensive ADAS suite.

The Japanese automaker is now reportedly planning to introduce a new SUV based on the Corolla Cross. It is most likely to be a 7-seater model, which will sit between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Innova Hycross. The SUV will feature a longer wheelbase to accommodate a third row. It will rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Jeep Meridian and higher trims of the Tata Safari.
It will be equipped with a 2.0L strong hybrid powertrain that also powers the Innova Hycross. This 7-seater SUV with a fuel efficiency figures of over 20kmpl will be a massive disruptor.

Toyota will launch its smallest and most affordable Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser FJ in our market by 2028. This compact rugged off-roader will come as a premium alternative to the Mahindra Thar Roxx. It is based on a body-on-frame IMV platform that also underpins the Fortuner, Innova Crysta and Hilux. It measures 4575mm in length, and has a wheelbase of 2580mm.
The SUV will be powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine that churns out 163hp and 246Nm of torque. The India-spec model could also get a strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid option. Transmission choices could include a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual unit. A part-time 4WD system will come as standard.
