The Future of Skoda Cars in India: What's Next?

Skoda Auto started its India operations in 2001 as a subsidiary of Skoda Auto, one of the rapidly growing automakers in Europe. It has even set up a manufacturing facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Later in 2019, Skoda became a wholly owned Indian subsidiary of the German automotive brand, Volkswagen Group into a new entity named Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, headquartered in Pune.

In 2022, Skoda Auto India recorded the best-ever sales growth; it sold 57,721 units, up from 23,858 units in 2021. After this record-breaking performance, Skoda aims to double its growth in 2023. With that said the company is planning to bring new products to the Indian car market. Further, Skoda is also targeting to sell over 100,000 units by the year 2025.

Skoda offerings in Indian car market

At present, Skoda is offering five models in India which include Kushaq, Slavia, Octavia, Superb, and the Kodiaq. The most affordable offering in the Skoda cars lineup is the Slavia which is priced between Rs 11.29 lakh to Rs 18.40 lakh (ex-showroom) while the Kodiaq is the expensive one, offered in the range of Rs 37.49 lakh to Rs 39.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Prices for other Skoda models lie in the range of Skoda Kushaq (Rs 11.59 lakh to Rs 19.69 lakh, ex-showroom), Skoda Superb (Rs 34.19 lakh to Rs 37.29 lakh, ex-showroom), Skoda Octavia (Rs 27.35 to Rs 30.45 lakh, ex-showroom).

Czech automaker Skoda witnessed the best year in terms of sales in 2022. The company registered 53,721 units of sales last year which was 125.17 percent higher than the 23,858 units sold in 2021. In addition, India is now among the top three markets for Skoda Auto globally. The other two top markets are Germany and the Czech Republic.

After crossing the 50,000 sales landmark in 2022, the company is taking a step further to accelerate its sales figures in 2023. The carmaker has decided to introduce new products to the markets and to sell over 60,000 units this year in order to sustain the traction.

For 2023, Skoda Auto plans to launch a slew of new products. It will include the Skoda Octavia RS iV, Skoda Enyaq iV, and Skoda Slavia RS. One can expect updates to the current model line-up in due course of time. The New Octavia RS iV will be brought into the country via the Completely Built Unit (CBU) or Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route.

On future product strategy, the automaker has announced that it will deepen its strategic focus on both Internal Combustion Engine vehicles (ICE) and Electric Vehicles (EV). The company has further stated in the past that it would focus more on EVs than hybrids in India.
