5 Upcoming Hybrid SUVs in India - Maruti Fronx, Kia Sonet and More

Maruti Fronx and Kia Sonet could get hybrid powertrains in future updates. Renault Bridger and Honda's upcoming compact SUV could also explore hybrid technology. Toyota Taisor Hybrid remains unconfirmed, with no official launch timeline.

Hybrid cars could become more common in India over the next few years as automakers explore ways to improve fuel efficiency without moving entirely to electric vehicles. Several brands are reportedly working on hybrid versions of their compact SUVs, including Maruti Suzuki, Kia, Renault, Honda and Toyota.

While some of these models are still in the planning stage, others have clearer timelines for their next-generation updates. Here is a look at five upcoming hybrid SUVs that could arrive in India in the coming years.

1. Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid

Maruti Suzuki could introduce hybrid technology in the Fronx with a future update. The compact SUV is expected to use the brand's 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine as part of a hybrid setup. The system could use an electric motor and a small battery to improve fuel efficiency. Reports suggest that the Fronx Hybrid could target a mileage figure of over 35kmpl, although this figure has not been officially confirmed. The hybrid version is expected to arrive as part of a future Fronx update. Maruti Suzuki has not yet announced its launch date or confirmed the final specifications.

2. Next-Generation Kia Sonet Hybrid

Kia is also planning to expand its hybrid technology to more models in India. The next-generation Sonet is expected to arrive around 2027, with a hybrid version potentially following later. Kia has indicated plans to introduce hybrid technology in the Indian market, including in the Sonet segment, over the coming years. However, the engine, battery and electric motor details of the upcoming Sonet Hybrid are not available yet. If introduced, the hybrid version could offer an alternative to the regular petrol and diesel variants. More details are expected closer to the next-generation model's launch.

3. Renault Bridger Hybrid

Renault is preparing a new sub-4-metre SUV called the Bridger, which is expected to sit below the Duster in the brand's lineup. Its production is planned for 2027. The new SUV is being developed on Renault's multi-energy platform, which can support different types of powertrains. Along with petrol and other possible options, a hybrid powertrain is also being considered. However, Renault has not confirmed whether the India-bound Bridger will get a hybrid version. If offered, it could give the brand another option in India's compact SUV segment.

4. Honda's Upcoming Compact SUV

Honda is developing a new compact SUV specifically for the Indian market, with an expected arrival by 2028. The model is likely to sit in the sub-4-metre SUV segment. A hybrid powertrain is one of the possibilities being discussed for the upcoming SUV. However, Honda has not confirmed whether it will offer a petrol-only version, a hybrid variant or both. More information about its design, features and engine options is expected closer to its launch. The new SUV will form part of Honda's plans to expand its presence in India's growing SUV market.

5. Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor Hybrid

Toyota could also consider introducing hybrid technology in the Urban Cruiser Taisor. The compact SUV shares its platform and several components with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. Reports suggest that the Taisor could use a hybrid system based on Maruti Suzuki's Z-Series petrol engine in the future. However, Toyota has not confirmed a hybrid variant or its launch timeline. If introduced, the Taisor Hybrid could expand Toyota's hybrid lineup to a smaller and more affordable SUV segment. For now, its powertrain details and launch plans remain unconfirmed.

More Hybrid SUVs Could Be on the Way

India's hybrid SUV segment could expand as carmakers look for ways to improve fuel efficiency while continuing to offer petrol-powered vehicles. Hybrid technology combines a combustion engine with an electric motor, helping reduce fuel consumption in suitable driving conditions. However, not all five models mentioned above have confirmed hybrid versions. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Renault Bridger and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor hybrid plans remain unconfirmed, while further details about the Kia Sonet and Honda's upcoming SUV are also awaited.

More details about these models should emerge as their launch plans and powertrain options become clearer.
