Tata sold 10339 EVs, while Mahindra hits 6210 EV sales mark VinFast sold 1238 electric vehicles in May 2026
India’s electric passenger vehicle market breaks all the previous records in May 2026, zooming past the 25,000 unit monthly threshold for the first time. Driven by increase in conventional fuel prices and expanding model portfolios, total EV registrations increased by 80.7% year-on-year to 25,880 units.
While the entire industry witnessed positive expansion, the headline belongs to Mahindra’s relentless chase of market leader Tata Motors, and a stunning increase in sales of Vietnamese EV maker, VinFast. The new comer has managed to beat legacy giants, including Kia and Hyundai.
Tata Motors has recorded a historic milestone in May 2026. The company becomes the first OEM in India to hit five-figure mark in a single month by registering 10,339 electric cars. Tata Motors EV sales reported a YoY growth of 103.4 per cent.
However, Mahindra & Mahindra is rapidly eroding Tata’s absolute dominance. Thanks to the rising demand for its electric origin SUV lineup, Mahindra recorded 6,210 registrations, posting a YoY sales growth of 98.3%. Mahindra captured an impressive 24% market share for the month, steadily narrowing the distance to Tata’s 39.9% share. Mahindra has also managed to beat JSW MG Motor India, which recorded a total EV sales of 4,985 units in May 2025.
The big news of the month came from the newcomer VinFast Auto. Within just months of entering the highly competitive Indian market, VinFast captured a 4.8% market share by registering 1,238 units in May 2026. VinFast sells more EVs than Hyundai and Kia combined in May 2026.
Hyundai sold 460 electric vehicles in May 2026, registering a sharp YoY sales decline of 36 per cent.
Kia registered just 349 units, trailing significantly behind the Vietnamese EV maker.
