Kia has launched its global flagship 7-seater SUV, the Sorento in the Indian market at a very aggressive starting price of Rs 27.99 lakh, ex-showroom. At this price tag, the Kia Sorento comes as an alternative to the higher-spec variants of the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari. In this article we compare the price, specifications, and other aspects of the Sorento and XUV 7XO.


The base spec Kia Sorento HTE offers a larger overall footprint and refined international engineering, while the top-spec Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7L is packed with luxury features, LEVEL-2 ADAS and optional AWD at a lower price point.

Mahindra XUV 7XO: it is powered by a 2.0L turbo petrol and a 2.2L turbo diesel engines. While the former is good for 200 PS and 380 Nm of torque, the oil burner is good for 185 PS and 450 Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The top-spec XUV 7XO diesel is offered with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive (AWD) options.


Sorento HTE: the diesel version is powered by a 2.2-litre engine that also powers the Kia Carnival. This engine produces 193 PS and 442 Nm of torque, and is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It is only available in a front-wheel-drive option.


The hybrid setup comprising a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine producing 180 PS and 265 Nm, and an electric motor that adds another 65 PS and 264 Nm. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox.


XUV 7XO Vs Sorento Dimensions


The Sorento measures 4810mm in length, 1900mm in width and 1700mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2815mm. This SUV offers a ground clearance of 176mm. On the flip side, the XUV 7XO is 4695mm long, 1890mm wide and 1755mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2750mm.


The Sorento is 115mm longer, 10mm wider, and its wheelbase is 65mm longer than the XUV 7XO. However, the 7XO offers 200mm of wheelbase.

It is packed with features like Level 2 ADAS safety suite, 540-degree surround-view camera, panoramic sky roof, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, 6-way powered driver seat with memory function, ventilated front seats, and 7 airbags.


Kia Sorento HTE: the base variant comes with essential features such as bi-LED projector headlights, an 8.8-inch digital instrument console, a 12.8-inch touchscreen display, leatherette upholstery, cruise control, single-zone climate control, electronic stability control and 6 airbags.


The Feature Gap: the base Sorento HTE misses out on features like panoramic sunroof, LEVEL-2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, powered front seats, a premium audio system. All these features are standard with the top-spec XUV 7XO.

If you want maximum features, ADAS level-2 safety tech, plush cabin experience and all-wheel-drive setup, then go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7L Diesel AWD AT.


Choose the Kia Sorento HTE if you value more cabin space with bigger dimensions, a quick-shifting 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, or the option of an efficient strong-hybrid engine.
