Toyota cars has just officially revealed the first images and details of its upcoming electric SUV. Named the Urban SUV concept, it is the sibling of the Maruti Suzuki eVX SUV that was showcased earlier at the 2023 Indian Auto Expo. The Urban SUV is expected to go into production next year. Let’s take a closer look.
As part of their joint venture, the Toyota Urban SUV concept will share its platform and architecture with the upcoming Maruti eVX to help achieve a better economy of scale. Looking at the official pictures, the Urban SUV’s design is similar to other recent Toyota EV concepts like the bZ compact SUV that was showcased last year. The front end gets a slim grille, C-shaped LED DRLs, and a large air dam on the front bumper. It has quite an upright profile with flared wheel arches, silver roof rails, and flush-fitting door handles. At the rear, the Urban SUV’s design is similar to the eVX, featuring a bootlid with a raked windscreen, full-width LED taillights, and a chunky rear bumper.
Toyota is yet to reveal what the Urban SUV’s interior looks like, but it will likely be identical to the Maruti eVX. The SUV’s cabin will have a minimalist theme with the dashboard dominated by a single, large screen which displays both the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster. It will also get an aeroplane-style steering yoke, rotary gear selector, and vertical AC vents.
The Urban SUV will be offered with two battery pack sizes, with the bigger option offering over 400 km of range. Toyota has stated that the SUV will be offered in either single-motor FWD or dual-motor AWD variants. However, further details are yet to be announced.
The Urban SUV is slated to go on sale globally by mid to late 2024, with an India launch to follow a few months later. It will be manufactured locally in India at Suzuki’s Gujarat production facility for both export and domestic markets. The Urban SUV will become Toyota’s entry-level electric SUV in markets like Europe upon hitting showrooms.
