Mitsubishi Pajero Set to Debut Next Week – New 4WD SUV Details

New Mitsubishi Pajero will debut globally on September 2, 2026. It gets a body-on-frame platform and advanced S-AWC 4WD system. Hybrid, PHEV and electric powertrains could join the range later.

Mitsubishi is preparing to bring back the Pajero, with the fifth-generation SUV set to make its global debut on September 2, 2026. The new model is expected to go on sale in global markets from early 2027.

The new Pajero will return as a more serious off-road SUV, with a body-on-frame chassis, advanced 4WD system and rugged design. It is part of Mitsubishi’s plan to introduce 13 new models by 2031.

New Pajero gets a body-on-frame platform

The biggest change will be underneath. Unlike the previous-generation Pajero, which used a unibody construction, the new model will return to a body-on-frame chassis.

The platform is expected to be derived from the architecture used by the Mitsubishi Triton pickup. This should give the new Pajero better strength and improve its ability to handle difficult terrain.

Mitsubishi has also confirmed that the SUV will get its S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) system. It uses torque distribution and torque vectoring to improve traction and stability on different surfaces.

Super Select 4WD-II expected

The new Pajero is also expected to get Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, which is already available on the Triton. It allows the driver to switch between two-wheel drive, full-time all-wheel drive and low-range modes depending on the conditions.

The SUV could also offer several terrain modes, including Gravel, Sand, Snow, Mud and Rock, along with Eco and Normal modes. Mitsubishi is also reportedly considering a dedicated off-road version that could take on models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Hybrid power could be offered

Mitsubishi has not yet revealed the engine options for the new Pajero. However, the company is working on hybrid powertrains, including diesel-hybrid technology.

This means the new SUV could eventually get a diesel-hybrid powertrain, while plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions could also follow at a later stage. The final engine and powertrain details are expected to be revealed during the global debut.

New Pajero gets a modern cabin

Mitsubishi has released several teasers showing parts of the new Pajero's exterior and interior. The SUV gets vertically stacked pixel-style lighting elements at the front. The teasers also show a large display with a 3-gauge-inspired interface, along with premium semi-aniline leather seats.

Other features expected to be offered include ventilated seats, a 14.3-inch screen and advanced 4WD controls. A preview of the centre console also shows a 4WD dial, transfer-case controls, wireless charging area, hill descent control and rear differential lock.

New Pajero launch timeline

The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero will make its global debut on September 2, 2026, with sales expected to begin in early 2027. The SUV is expected to reach Asian markets in early 2027. Mitsubishi has not confirmed an India launch yet, although the new Pajero could appeal to buyers looking for a premium off-road SUV.

In the US, the new model is expected to arrive around 2030 and could be sold under the Montero name. Mitsubishi is also planning smaller SUVs under the Pajero family, with hybrid technology expected to feature on some of these models between 2028 and 2030.
