JSW Motors’ First India Car – SUV, EV or Hybrid?

JSW Motors is expected to launch its first India car before Diwali 2026. A Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid SUV could lead the line-up. New electric SUVs and seven trademarked names are also part of its plans.

JSW Motors is getting ready to enter India’s passenger vehicle market as an independent carmaker, separate from the JSW MG Motor India joint venture. The company is expected to launch its first vehicle before Diwali 2026, with SUVs and new-energy vehicles likely to form the core of its initial line-up.

JSW Motors has also filed trademarks for seven names – Combat, Urbanique, Dominor, Adventura, Eleve, Sereno and Cadet. The company has not confirmed which of these names will be used for its upcoming vehicles.

A plug-in hybrid SUV could come first

JSW Motors has partnered with Chinese carmaker Chery to bring and localise its products in India. One of the first models expected from this partnership is an SUV based on the Jetour T2. The boxy SUV has a rugged design and is expected to come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The model has already been spotted testing in India, making it a strong candidate to become JSW Motors' first passenger vehicle.

The international version of the Jetour T2 uses a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine along with electric motors. The India-spec model could receive changes to suit local requirements, with more details expected closer to its launch.

Could JSW start with an EV?

Electric vehicles are also expected to play an important role in JSW Motors' India plans. The company has been testing models such as the Chery iCar V23 and Jaecoo J5 in India. The iCar V23 is a compact electric SUV with a boxy design, while the Jaecoo J5 has a more conventional crossover shape.

The iCar V23, in particular, could fit into JSW Motors' planned EV portfolio. It is possible that one of these models could be introduced in India after the first launch, depending on the company's product strategy.

Seven new names trademarked

The seven trademark applications filed by JSW Motors provide some clues about the company's future plans. Combat and Adventura sound suited to rugged SUVs, while Urbanique could work for an urban-focused compact SUV. Eleve has a more premium feel, while Sereno could be used for a comfort-focused model.

Dominor has a more performance-oriented character, and Cadet could potentially be used for a smaller model. However, trademark filings do not confirm that all seven names will be used for production vehicles.

JSW Motors to focus on new-energy vehicles

JSW Motors is expected to focus heavily on electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extended vehicles as it builds its passenger vehicle portfolio.

The Chery partnership will allow the company to use existing platforms and technology while making changes for Indian conditions. Initial models could be brought to India through CBU or CKD routes, with localisation expected to increase over time. A separate sales and service network is also being developed for the JSW Motors brand.

First car expected before Diwali 2026

For now, JSW Motors has not confirmed whether its first India model will be an SUV, EV or hybrid. However, the Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid SUV appears to be one of the strongest possibilities based on the models already seen testing in India. The company is expected to reveal more details about its first vehicle and brand strategy closer to its planned debut before Diwali 2026.
