Hyundai compact SUV (HE1i) will rival the Tata Punch EV. It’s expected to come with two battery options and premium features.
Hyundai Motor India has confirmed its plan to enter the mass marker EV segment in financial year 2026-2027. While the carmaker has remained tight lipped about the product details, the upcoming model is expected to be based on the Hyundai Inster EV sold in European market. Codenamed HE1i, the upcoming Hyundai compact EV will directly take on the segment-leading the Tata Punch EV.
For reference, the Tata Punch EV is currently available with 30kWh and 40kWh battery pack options, delivering claimed range of up to 375km and 468km, respectively. The new Hyundai electric SUV is expected to borrow the 42kWh (Standard Range) and 49kWh (Long Range) battery packs from the Inster EV. The Standard variant delivers a claimed range of 300km, while the Long Range version offers 355km on a single charge.
Spy shots suggest that the upcoming Hyundai EV will carry a boxy and upright stance similar to the Inster EV. Upfront, it will feature split headlamps, a closed-off grille, silver skid plate, charging ports, and a sporty bumper. The side profile will be enhanced by black body cladding, prominent wheel arches, alloy wheels and roof rails. At the back, the EV will sport squared-off tailgate and pixel-style LED taillamps.
Interior details of the Hyundai HE1i remain under wraps. However, it’s expected to be a well-equipped EV with features such as a dual 10.25-inch display setup – one for the infotainment and another for the instrument cluster. Other key features might include ventilated front seats, a sunroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charger, Hyundai BlueLink services, OTA (over-the-air) updates, automatic climate control, ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) and more.
The new Hyundai compact EV will target urban buyers looking for an affordable, practical and premium electric SUV. If Hyundai Motor India achieves a high localisation for the HE1i, it’s expected to be priced very competitively. Its arch rival, the Tata Punch EV is currently available within the price range of Rs 9.69 lakh – Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom).
