Hyundai's new compact EV could offer around 500 km of range. Next-gen Tata Nexon.ev could offer more than 525 km of claimed range. Maruti Suzuki is developing a new EV priced below Rs 10 lakh.
India's electric car market is gradually moving beyond premium models, with several more affordable EVs expected to arrive in the next few years. Hyundai, Tata Motors, Renault, VinFast and Maruti Suzuki are all working on new electric cars for the Indian market.
Five new models are expected to arrive by 2028, with most of them likely to feature an SUV-style body. Here's what we know so far.
1. Hyundai HE1i
Hyundai is expected to launch its new entry-level electric SUV, currently codenamed HE1i, by November or December 2026. The model is being developed mainly for India and is expected to be designed around local requirements. Spy shots suggest that the EV will feature a boxy design with a focus on maximising cabin space. A high ground clearance, large windows and raised roof rails will give it a traditional SUV look.
Inside, the HE1i is expected to get a minimalist dashboard with two slim screens. These could include a 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Hyundai is likely to offer two LFP battery options, with the larger battery expected to deliver a range of around 500 km. The company has also confirmed that Level 2 ADAS will be available.

2. Next-Gen Tata Nexon EV
Tata Motors is expected to launch the next-generation Nexon around the middle of 2027, followed by the new Nexon.ev. The next-generation electric SUV is expected to feature a completely redesigned exterior, improved build quality and a more feature-rich cabin. Tata could also introduce additional and improved ADAS functions. Technical specifications have not been revealed yet. However, the new Nexon.ev is expected to continue with LFP battery technology, while its maximum claimed range could increase to more than 525 km.
3. Renault Bridger EV
Renault has confirmed that its new Bridger SUV will launch in India during the second half of 2027. An electric version is also planned and could arrive in the first half of 2028. Details about the electric version are currently limited, including its battery capacity, motor output and range. More information is expected closer to the launch. The Bridger EV will add another compact electric SUV to Renault's India lineup and could be positioned as a relatively accessible option in the segment.
4. VinFast VF X
VinFast is developing another compact electric SUV for India, currently known by the codename VF X. The model is expected to arrive in 2028. The Vietnamese automaker has already started development and is reportedly targeting a starting price of around Rs 11.5 lakh, ex-showroom. The VF X could therefore sit among the more affordable electric SUVs in India. However, its final price, battery specifications and range are yet to be announced.
5. Maruti Suzuki's Affordable EV
Maruti Suzuki is also developing a new electric car aimed at the affordable end of the market. According to a recent Fortune India report, the company is working on an EV that could have a starting price below Rs 10 lakh, ex-showroom.
The upcoming model is expected to be considerably smaller than the other EVs on this list and could be positioned in the A-segment. Its range could be similar to the Tata Tiago.ev, which currently has a claimed range of up to 285 km. Maruti Suzuki could launch this new electric car sometime in 2028. If priced as expected, it would give the brand a new entry point into India's electric passenger vehicle market.
