New Wagon R Flex Fuel – Engine Updates, Features, and Expected Price

Wagon R becomes India's first mass-market flex fuel car. Updated 1.2-litre engine supports ethanol blends up to E100. Prices are expected to start from around Rs 5.5 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the Wagon R Flex Fuel, making it India's first mass-market flex fuel passenger vehicle. The new hatchback has been developed to support higher ethanol blends, in line with the government's push towards alternative fuels. While the overall design and cabin remain familiar, the biggest changes have been made under the hood.

Familiar Design With Minor Changes

The Wagon R Flex Fuel looks largely similar to the standard Wagon R sold in India. It continues to feature the tall-boy design, large windows, and practical shape that have made it a popular choice among buyers.

At the front, the hatchback gets the same grille, halogen headlamps, and bumper design. The side profile remains unchanged, complete with 14-inch alloy wheels and a blacked-out C-pillar. At the rear, the vertical taillamps are retained, while a small "Flex Fuel" badge on the tailgate helps identify the new version.

Cabin Remains Practical

Inside, the Wagon R Flex Fuel carries forward the same dashboard layout as the regular model. The dual-tone black and beige theme continues, along with a simple and user-friendly cabin design.

The hatchback offers ample space for passengers, especially in the rear seat, which remains one of its key strengths. The upright seating position and large glass area also add to the sense of space inside the cabin.

Features on Offer

The Wagon R Flex Fuel comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include steering-mounted controls, power windows, electrically adjustable and folding ORVMs, manual air conditioning, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, and built-in navigation.

These features are similar to those offered on the standard Wagon R, ensuring buyers do not miss out on everyday convenience.

Safety Package

On the safety front, the hatchback comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold assist, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminders for all occupants, and speed-sensitive door locks.

These features help make the Wagon R Flex Fuel a safer package for daily commuting.

Updated Engine for Flex Fuel Compatibility

The biggest highlight of the new Wagon R Flex Fuel is its updated 1.2-litre petrol engine. Maruti Suzuki has reworked the engine to support ethanol blends of up to E100.

This means the hatchback can run on a much wider range of ethanol-blended fuels compared to regular petrol cars. While the company has not revealed detailed performance figures yet, the engine has been specifically tuned to handle higher ethanol content efficiently.

The showcased model is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Expected Price and Launch Timeline

Maruti Suzuki has not announced the official launch date or pricing of the Wagon R Flex Fuel. However, the hatchback is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Prices could start from around Rs 5.5 lakh (ex-showroom), making it slightly more expensive than the standard petrol version due to the additional engineering required for flex fuel compatibility.
