Next-Gen Tata Nexon – 5 Major Updates Coming With Project Garud
Next-gen Tata Nexon, codenamed Project Garud, is expected to launch in 2027. The SUV could get a boxier design, redesigned cabin and new technology. Petrol and CNG are expected to continue, while the diesel engine could be dropped.
Tata Motors is working on the next-gen Nexon, internally codenamed Project Garud, which is expected to arrive in 2027. The new model will bring major changes to the popular compact SUV, including a redesigned exterior, a more spacious cabin and updates to its powertrain range.
The current-generation Nexon has been on sale since 2017 and received major updates in 2020 and 2023. The next-generation model is expected to be a much bigger change, with Tata reworking the SUV's structure, design and technology.
Here are five major updates expected with the next-gen Tata Nexon.
1. New Boxier Design
The next-generation Nexon is expected to move towards a more upright and boxy design. Recent test vehicles have shown changes around the A-pillar, C-pillar and rear windscreen, indicating that the body structure will be significantly different from the current model.
Tata is likely to take design inspiration from its newer SUVs. The current Nexon has a coupe-like profile, while the new model could feature a more upright rear section. This change could improve rear headroom and make the cabin feel more spacious.

2. New Cabin and Technology
The interior of the next Nexon is expected to receive a complete redesign. Tata could introduce a new dashboard layout along with updated infotainment and connected-car technology. The company is also likely to improve the overall cabin experience with new equipment and a more modern design. More details about the feature list are expected closer to the launch.
3. Petrol and CNG to Continue
The next-generation Nexon is expected to continue with petrol and CNG powertrains. The current SUV is offered with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 120hp and 170Nm. The Nexon also gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 115hp and 260Nm, while its turbo-CNG version makes around 100hp and 170Nm. Tata could continue to offer petrol and CNG in the next generation, although the diesel engine's future remains uncertain.
4. Diesel Could Be Dropped
The biggest powertrain change could be the removal of the diesel engine. Tata's 1.5-litre diesel will need updates to meet upcoming emission regulations, which could make it more expensive to continue. As a result, Tata could focus on petrol and CNG while also exploring newer electrified powertrains. The Nexon EV is also expected to receive a corresponding update, although Tata could launch the electric and internal-combustion versions separately.
5. More Gearbox Options
The current Nexon is available with manual, AMT and DCT gearbox options. Tata is expected to retain some of this transmission flexibility with the next-generation model. Rather than focusing only on higher power, the new Nexon could bring improvements in refinement, fuel efficiency and everyday drivability.
Rivals
The compact SUV segment has become more competitive since the Nexon was launched. It now faces models such as the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Skoda Kylaq. The next-generation Nexon will therefore need more than a new exterior to remain competitive. Tata is expected to focus on cabin space, technology, efficiency and refinement along with the new design. Project Garud is expected to arrive in 2027 and could mark the biggest change yet for Tata's popular compact SUV.
