Finally, after months of speculation, spy shots and intense testing, Toyota Kirloskar Motors has unveiled the new Innova Hycross in India. The new third generation model, carries forward the legacy of the Innova Crysta which was launched in the country back in 2016. The six years gap between the two models has helped Toyota iron out the shortcoming on the Innova Crysta and launch a product worthy of its premium price tag.
Toyota Innova Hycross will be available in five variants. The standar petrol powertrain option is available on the G and GX variants while the strong hybrid is available on the VX, ZX and ZX (O) trim levels. There are a total of seven exterior colour options including Blackish Ageha Glass Flake, Platinum White Pearl, Sparkling Black Pearl Crystal shine, Silver Metallic, Avant-garde Bronze Metallic, Attitude Black Mica and Super White.
Unlike all previous models, the new Innova Hycross has shifted from a body-on-frame construction to a new TNGA-C monocoque chassis to help improve the overall ride comfort. The new car has also moved to a front wheel drive layout to help with ease of driving and a lighter steering wheel. In terms of powertrain, the new model uses the 5th generation TNGA electric-hybrid powertrain that is manufactured locally under the governments ‘Made in India’ initiative. The 2.0-litre engine uses a more efficient Atkinson cycle to return a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 21.1 kmpl. The new unit is rated for a maximum power output of 186 bhp and peak torque of 187 Nm. The 0-100 kmph sprint is completed under 10 seconds making it’s the fastest 7-seater MPV in the country. There will also be a 2.0-litre NA petrol engine on offer as well mated to a direct shift CVT gearbox option.
In terms of design, the new Toyota Innova Hycross is a sharp departure from the old Innova Crysta. The new model features a more SUV-ish design with muscular lines and protruding panels. The design of the India-spec Innova Hycross resembles the model launched globally on the 21 November 2022. At the front we get a new hexagonal grille with honeycomb element along with large INNOVA badging on the bonnet. The car also gets reprofiled bumpers and a new housing for the foglamps within the air dam. Showcasing the SUV intent of the new model, the company has provided it with skid plates at both the front and the rear, larger alloy wheels and wheel cladding all around.
On the inside, the new Innova Hycross features an upmarket cabin with soft touch leather all around. The interior is finished in a chestnut brown upholstery giving the car an overall premium appeal. Other new features on the inside include ventilated front seats, ottoman seats in the middle row, a new 10.1-inch connect car infotainment unit, 9-speaker JBL system, powered tailgate with power folding and multi-zone AC. The extended wheelbase and well contoured exteriors help liberate more making the overall cabin roomy.
For the first time, Toyota is also offering its Safety Sense 3.0 suite of safety features which includes features like radar guided cruise control, lane departure warning, auto high beam assist, blind spot monitoring and emergency braking among other. Standard safety features on the car include ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, ESP and traction control.
The company is expected to fully launch the car with prices sometime during January 2023 and also start deliveries. Current expected price of the new model is around Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).
