Toyota's new Urban Cruiser EV was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2025. Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will be a similar version of Maruti e Vitara but with cosmetic and feature updates. The car was being introduced as a concept but its production variant was already out in the international market. Toyota will introduce the Urban Cruiser EV in India in the second half of 2025 after launching the e Vitara in March 2025.
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV's design will be very close to that of the Maruti e Vitara but not as much. The Urban Cruiser EV's front will less aggressive and less detailed than the e Vitara's front. It will get thinner headlamps with a chrome garnish and a thinner bumper with vertical air intake vents on either side. Elsewhere, at the rear and sides, the SUV will be almost identical to the e Vitara with some minor differences. The Urban Cruiser EV will be measure as 4285mm in length, 1800mm in width, and 1640mm in height. Additionally, it measures 2700mm in wheelbase, which offers a sufficient space for passengers. The car will get big 19-inch wheels installed and a turn radius of just 5.2 meters, thus very easy to handle even in corners.
Though the Auto Expo car featured tinted glass, photographs from other global markets reveal that the cabin of the Urban Cruiser EV is similar to that of the Maruti e Vitara. The interior features a two-spoke steering wheel, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, and a 10.1-inch digital instrument display. The Urban Cruiser EV also gets driver aids and a 360-degree surround-camera monitor.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV likely to have two battery variants: a 49kWh variant and a 61kwh variant. The smaller capacity 49kWh battery will be coupled with a 143 hp front axle motor, while the larger 61kwh battery will have a 173 hp motor. Both batteries deliver 193 Nm torque to ensure satisfactory performance. Even though the official range has not been announced, the Urban Cruiser EV with the higher 61kWh battery is likely to offer a range of more than 500 km on a single charge.
Urban Cruiser EV will be available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) options. The front-wheel drive version with the 61kWh battery will have 174hp, and the two-motor AWD will have 184hp and 300Nm of torque.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will be facing the new category of mid-size electric SUVs with Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, and Tata Harrier EV. Launch would happen in the second half of 2025 at a rough estimate of Rs. 20-25 lakh. It would then become an affordable yet aspirational product for those wanting to upgrade to an electric SUV.
