Volkswagen has officially begun deliveries of the Golf GTI across India. The iconic hot hatch was launched last month as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and carries a price tag of Rs 53 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite the steep pricing, the first batch of 150 units has already made its way to Indian buyers.
Under the hood, the Golf GTI packs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 261 BHP and 370 Nm of torque. Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.
Volkswagen Golf GTI comes loaded with features suited for both performance and comfort. It gets sporty bucket seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. The centre console houses a large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, making it a tech-rich cockpit.
In addition to that, it offers a sunroof, 3-zone automatic climate control, and Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).
Joining the performance league later this year is Volkswagen’s sister brand Skoda, which is preparing to launch the Octavia RS in India. The RS has a strong fanbase in the country thanks to its sharp dynamics and value-for-performance appeal.
Though Skoda has not revealed much yet, industry sources suggest that the upcoming Octavia RS will be priced above Rs 50 lakh, placing it in the same league as the Golf GTI. The car is likely to come with a similar powertrain and performance-focused features, continuing its legacy as a driver’s car.
