Three new PHEV SUVs from MG, BYD and Jetour planned for India. These plug-in hybrid SUVs will arrive by the end of 2026.
The Indian automotive industry is set to witness multiple new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) from JSW MG Motor, BYD and JSW Motors in the coming months. MG has confirmed the debut of a ‘new energy vehicle’ (codenamed 520) on July 16, which is likely to be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in China. Its market launch is expected around the 2026 Diwali season.
BYD will also introduce its first PHEV by the end of this year. Called the BYD Seal U (also known as the Sealion 6 in select global markets), the model will strengthen the brand’s presence in the Indian market. JSW Motors, in partnership with Cherry, plans to launch the Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid SUV by Diwali 2026. Here are the key details of these upcoming plug-in hybrid SUVs.
The upcoming MG PHEV will essentially be a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560, which might carry a new name in India. The Starlight 560 is globally available with a 105bhp, 1.5L petrol engine paired with a 20.5kWh battery pack. This setup delivers a cumulative power of 195bhp and 230Nm of torque. With a FWD drivetrain system, the SUV offers an all-electric range of 125km and a total range of over 1,000km.
The upcoming MG plug-in hybrid SUV will be positioned against the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari. It’s expected to be priced from Rs 20 lakh onwards.
The BYD Seal U will mark debut of the brand’s renowned DM-I hybrid technology in India. The PHEV features a 1.5L turbo petrol engine paired with two electric motors and an 18.3kWh battery pack. Its combined power output stands at 218bhp and 300Nm of torque. The SUV’s AWD version with an additional rear electric motor, delivers a maximum power of 323bhp and 550Nm of torque. It does 0 to 100kmph in 5.9 seconds.
When launched, the BYD Seal U will go head-to-head against the upcoming Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid SUV. Its prices are likely to start around Rs 45 lakh for the base variant, and go up to Rs 50 lakh for the top variant.
The Jetour T2 will be the first offering from JSW Motors in India, slated to launch by October 2026. The SUV will be assembled at the brand’s upcoming Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar facility in Maharashtra. It’s estimated to be priced between Rs 15 lakh – Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom).
Globally, the Jetour T2 is available with both plug-in hybrid and electric powertrain options. For India, the carmaker is likely to introduce the PHEV version, featuring a 1.5L turbo petrol engine (154bhp/220Nm) mated with a 26.7kWh battery pack. It can be had with either a single-motor FWD configuration or a dual-motor AWD layout. The battery pack offers an NEDC-certified electric range of 139km.
