BYD is preparing two new SUVs for the Indian market. Atto 2 EV could become the brand’s most affordable model. Seal U will bring plug-in hybrid technology to India.
BYD is planning to expand its SUV lineup in India with two new models in the coming months. The Chinese automaker is expected to introduce the Atto 2 electric SUV and the Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV, giving Indian customers more options across different price points.
Currently, BYD sells four models in India, including the Atto 3, Seal, e6 and Sealion 7. However, most of these vehicles are positioned in the premium EV space, limiting their reach among mainstream buyers.
The BYD Atto 2 is expected to be the more important launch for the Indian market, as it will sit below the Atto 3 in the company's lineup. The compact electric SUV could be positioned around Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), making it BYD's most affordable EV in India.
With its expected pricing, the Atto 2 could compete with upcoming electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Sierra EV and Mahindra BE 6. The Atto 2 measures around 4.3 metres in length, with a width of 1.8 metres, height of 1.7 metres and a wheelbase of around 2.6 metres. These dimensions place it in the popular mid-size SUV category.

Internationally, the BYD Atto 2 is available with multiple battery and motor options.
The SUV gets different power outputs, including:
Depending on the variant, it comes with battery packs ranging from 32 kWh to 64.8 kWh. The top-spec version offers a claimed range of up to 430 km (WLTP) on a single charge.
For India, BYD is expected to introduce only the fully electric version, as the plug-in hybrid variant may not be suitable for this segment due to higher costs.
Alongside the Atto 2, BYD is also preparing to launch the Seal U SUV in India. Unlike the Atto 2, the Seal U launch has already been confirmed by the company. It will sit below the Sealion 7 in BYD's global SUV lineup and will target buyers looking for a premium family SUV with hybrid technology.
The Seal U measures around 4.8 metres in length, 1.9 metres in width and 1.7 metres in height. It also gets a long wheelbase of around 2.8 metres, which should provide a spacious cabin.
The India-spec BYD Seal U is expected to arrive with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Internationally, the SUV is offered with different PHEV setups, but India is likely to get a combination of a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and an 18.3 kWh LFP battery pack.
This setup could offer an electric-only range of around 125 km, while the combined driving range could go beyond 1,100 km. The Seal U is also expected to be assembled in India using imported knocked-down kits.
