BMW is gearing up to add an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version to its M2 Coupe lineup, making it the first entry-level M car with this setup. Currently, the M2 is the only car in the M lineup that’s purely rear-wheel drive (RWD), while the M3, M4, and M5 all come with AWD as standard. The M2 xDrive will offer more power and faster acceleration than its RWD counterpart, bringing the performance coupe to new heights.
The M2 xDrive will be powered by the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six engine found in the RWD version, but it’s expected to get a 50-horsepower increase, bringing the total to 530hp. This boost in power will help offset the added weight of the front transaxle required for the AWD system. With this upgrade, the M2 xDrive is expected to hit 0-100 kmph faster than the current M2 automatic, which already clocks in at 4 seconds.

While the M2 RWD offers both an 8-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual gearbox, the M2 xDrive will only come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This decision aligns with BMW’s preference for a more refined and powerful driving experience in the AWD M cars like the M3, M4, and M5. The xDrive system will be rear-biased, allowing the car to feel more like a rear-wheel drive car in performance while still maintaining the traction benefits of AWD.
Production of the BMW M2 xDrive is expected to begin at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico by mid-2026. The global launch of the AWD model is set to follow in the second half of the year. The M2 xDrive is likely to make its way to India as well, priced slightly above the current Rs 1.03 crore price of the RWD version.
