New BMW i3 Revealed – 912 km Range, 469 hp and 400 kW Charging

New BMW i3 50 xDrive produces 469 hp and 645 Nm Up to 912 km WLTP range on a 108.7 kWh battery 800V system supports DC charging at up to 400 kW

BMW has revealed the new i3, the electric version of its latest-generation 3 Series. The i3 50 xDrive leads the electric lineup with 469 hp, 645 Nm and a claimed WLTP range of up to 912 km. The new electric sedan is based on BMW's Neue Klasse architecture and uses the company's sixth-generation eDrive technology. It also gets an 800V electrical system that supports DC charging at up to 400 kW. BMW will offer the new i3 alongside petrol and mild-hybrid versions of the 3 Series. A plug-in hybrid model is also planned for 2027.

New BMW i3 Gets 469 hp

The BMW i3 50 xDrive uses two electric motors, with one motor on each axle. Together, they produce 469 hp and 645 Nm. The electric sedan can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 4.7 seconds. Power is sent to all four wheels through BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The i3 50 xDrive uses a 108.7 kWh battery, giving it a claimed WLTP range of up to 912 km. BMW will also offer the i3 40 xDrive. This version produces 374 hp and uses an 82.8 kWh battery, with a claimed range of up to 710 km. It also gets one electric motor on each axle.

400 kW Fast Charging

One of the biggest highlights of the new BMW i3 is its charging technology. Both electric versions use an 800V electrical architecture. The i3 50 xDrive supports DC charging at up to 400 kW. BMW says a 10-minute charging stop can add up to 423 km of WLTP range. The electric sedan also supports bidirectional charging, allowing the battery to work with compatible energy systems beyond conventional vehicle charging.

Based on BMW's Neue Klasse Platform

The new BMW i3 is the first 3 Series model based on the company's Neue Klasse architecture. It gets sixth-generation eDrive hardware and cylindrical battery cells. BMW has also introduced its Heart of Joy control computer with the electric i3. It combines several drive and chassis functions into a single control unit and, according to BMW, operates ten times faster than the previous system. An i3 M60 xDrive is also planned to join the lineup next year.

New BMW i3 Gets 17.9-Inch Screen

The cabin of the new i3 features BMW's latest Panoramic iDrive interface. A 17.9-inch central touchscreen forms the main part of the new dashboard layout. The electric sedan can also be equipped with an optional 3D head-up display and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel.

BMW Operating System X is based on the Android Open Source Project and supports touch controls, physical inputs and voice commands. The Intelligent Personal Assistant is also being expanded with Amazon Alexa+ technology. Other available features include multifunction seats, M Sport seats, rear-seat heating and a Harman Kardon audio system.

New BMW i3 Gets Fresh Design

The new i3 follows BMW's latest design language, with a longer wheelbase, short overhangs, flush door handles and flared wheel arches. The kidney grille and twin headlamps sit within one visual element at the front. The electric i3 will be available with 19- to 21-inch wheels. The new-generation 3 Series also includes petrol and 48V mild-hybrid models. The performance-focused M350 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid assistance and produces 443 hp.

New BMW i3 Production

BMW will produce the new electric i3 at its Munich plant. Petrol-powered 3 Series models will be built at Dingolfing, while high-voltage batteries will come from BMW's Irlbach-Straßkirchen facility. With up to 912 km of claimed WLTP range, 400 kW charging and BMW's latest Neue Klasse technology, the new i3 marks a major technology update for the electric 3 Series range.
