BMW 7 Series, i7 Facelift Launch Today - Bigger Battery, 8K Screen and New iDrive

BMW is set to launch the updated 7 Series and i7 in India today, September 11. The facelifted luxury sedans were unveiled globally earlier this year and come with revised styling, a heavily updated cabin and changes to their powertrain options.

The new models are expected to get several of the upgrades already introduced internationally, including BMW’s latest Panoramic iDrive, a larger battery for the i7 and an upgraded rear-seat Theatre Screen.

BMW 7 Series, i7 facelift: Expected price

The outgoing BMW 7 Series is priced at around Rs 1.85 crore (ex-showroom) for both petrol and diesel versions, while the i7 is priced between Rs 2.10 crore and Rs 2.58 crore. With the facelift bringing updated styling, new technology and revised powertrains, prices of both models are expected to increase. BMW is yet to announce the India-spec pricing, which will be revealed at the launch today.

More powerful BMW 7 Series expected

The international facelifted 7 Series continues with petrol and diesel powertrains, with both getting performance upgrades. The updated 740i, now called the 740 xDrive internationally, uses a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 400hp and 580Nm. This represents an increase of 19hp and 60Nm over the previous version.

The 740d continues with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine, producing 313hp and 670Nm. This is an increase of 27hp and 20Nm. BMW is also expected to introduce the updated powertrain specifications in India.

BMW i7 gets bigger battery and more range

The electric i7 gets a more significant powertrain update. The international i7 50 xDrive replaces the previous eDrive50 and moves from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive. It gets a larger 112.4kWh battery, up from the previous 101.7kWh unit. The dual-motor setup produces 445hp and 660Nm. While peak power is slightly lower, torque increases by 10Nm.

The biggest gain is in range. The i7 50 xDrive has a claimed WLTP range of 727km, which is 103km more than before. The range-topping i7 M70 xDrive also gets the larger 112.4kWh battery. Its dual-motor setup produces 680hp and 1,015Nm, while its claimed WLTP range increases to 686km.

New Panoramic iDrive for the cabin

The biggest interior change on the facelifted BMW 7 Series and i7 is the introduction of BMW's new Panoramic iDrive system. Instead of a traditional driver display, the new system uses a full-width screen positioned at the base of the windscreen. It is joined by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a 14.6-inch front passenger display.

The screens run BMW's latest Operating System X, bringing a newer interface and updated connected features. The facelifted models also get a new four-spoke steering wheel and an updated ambient lighting system that extends across the dashboard and into the rear cabin.

8K Theatre Screen gets bigger

The optional rear-seat Theatre Screen has also received an upgrade. The screen now measures 31.3 inches and gets an 8K resolution. It supports video calls, streaming and gaming, while the rear door-mounted screens allow passengers to adjust the Theatre Screen's position and viewing angle. BMW has also revised the automatic door controls, moving the open and close buttons to a more convenient location.

Exterior changes remain subtle

The updated 7 Series and i7 retain the overall design of the current models but get several styling changes. At the front, the cars feature a boxier grille with new horizontal elements and an illuminated surround. The split LED headlights have also been revised, with slimmer daytime running lights positioned above the main headlights. The side profile remains largely unchanged, although new alloy wheel designs are expected. At the rear, the wraparound LED taillights feature new lighting elements, while the bumper has been redesigned with a cleaner appearance.

Will the 7 Series get a plug-in hybrid?

BMW offers plug-in hybrid versions of the updated 7 Series in international markets. The M760e xDrive produces 612hp, while a 750e xDrive variant is also part of the international lineup. However, BMW has not yet confirmed whether a plug-in hybrid version will be introduced in India. The India-spec 7 Series and i7 powertrain lineup and variant details will be confirmed at today's launch.
