The Vietnamese EV maker, VinFast has been in the spotlight for a while now. The brand is after all arriving in India with its range of electric cars for Indian customers. Recent media reports revealed that VinFast is likely to launch its first locally assembled car, (VF e34 most probably), in 2025. On top of that, the India-spec VinFast cars are expected to be priced in the range of Rs 25-30 lakh (ex-showroom). This move from the brand will eventually attract a wide range of customers in India.
India imposes an import duty of 100 percent on imported cars with a CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value of more than USD 40,000 and 70 percent on cars valued less than USD 40,000, whereas CKD kits attract 15 percent duty.
However, VinFast will enter the Indian market through the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route. This will result in saving high import duties on vehicles and thus can be priced competitively. VinFast will sell its electric cars in India between Rs 25-30 lakh (ex-showroom), offering a range of 300-500 km. Further, the company projects that India's growing electric car market will make 1,50,000 units by the end of 2024, up from 90,000 units in 2023.
More details will also be revealed by the brand at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Global Expo which is scheduled for January 2025.
VinFast is most likely to launch the VFe-34, VF6, and VF7 models in India. Out of these, the VF e34 was spied recently, hinting that it will be the first EV model to enter the Indian market.
Based on spy shots, the India-spec EV will feature similar styling as the Vietnamese-spec model. Some of its exterior highlights are sleek LED headlamps, thick body cladding, body-coloured door handles, chrome window garnish, 5-spoke alloy wheels, and more. It is also said that the upcoming VF e34 will have the same dimensions as the Creta EV (4300mmx1768mmx1615mm).
Seeing the growing demand for hybrid cars, popular mass-market car manufacturers like Kia, Hyundai, Mahindra and Renault are planning to launch hybrid SUVs in India.
