Audi A2 e-tron Revealed With 453 km Range and Record Efficiency

Audi A2 e-tron will be the brand’s most efficient production car. It delivers an impressive 7.81 km/kWh efficiency figure. The electric hatchback gets a 61 kWh battery with 453 km range.

Audi has revealed new details about its upcoming A2 e-tron electric hatchback, offering a closer look at its design, efficiency and battery technology. The new EV is expected to make its global debut later this year, with European sales likely to begin between late 2026 and early 2027.

The A2 nameplate is making a comeback after more than two decades, but this time it returns as an all-electric model. Just like the original A2 launched in 1999, the new generation focuses heavily on efficiency, lightweight engineering and everyday usability.

Audi claims that the A2 e-tron will become the most energy-efficient production vehicle the company has ever developed.

Audi A2 e-tron Becomes Brand’s Most Efficient Car

The biggest highlight of the upcoming Audi A2 e-tron is its impressive efficiency figures. During preliminary WLTP testing, the electric hatchback recorded energy consumption of just 12.8 kWh/100 km, which translates to around 7.81 km/kWh.

Audi has achieved this efficiency through a combination of improved aerodynamics, an advanced electric motor and a specially developed battery pack. The optional Efficiency Package further reduces energy consumption by up to 0.9 kWh/100 km compared to the standard model.

Aerodynamic Design Inspired by Original A2

The new Audi A2 e-tron follows the same efficiency-focused approach as the original model. Audi has worked extensively on reducing air resistance to improve the vehicle’s overall range. The electric hatchback gets a drag coefficient of just 0.24, making it the most aerodynamic compact Audi model to date.

The design includes a rounded front section, smooth roofline, fully enclosed underbody, air curtains, reduced wheel arch gaps, aero-optimised alloy wheels and an active front cooling intake. The active cooling intake stays closed during normal driving to reduce drag. It automatically opens during fast charging, heavy acceleration or high temperatures to provide additional cooling for the battery and electrical components.

Audi A2 e-tron Design Details

The A2 e-tron prototype carries several design elements inspired by the original A2 while following Audi’s latest electric vehicle design language. The front features split LED headlamps and L-shaped air intakes, while the side profile gets aero-focused alloy wheels, flared wheel arches and a compact futuristic shape.

At the rear, the electric hatchback gets wide rectangular tail lamps and an upright design that gives it a practical yet modern appearance. The overall silhouette also takes inspiration from the original A2 while giving it a more contemporary EV look.

61 kWh Battery Offers Around 453 km Range

Audi has confirmed that the entry-level 140kW version of the A2 e-tron will use a 61 kWh battery pack, with 58 kWh of usable capacity. The battery powers a rear-mounted electric motor producing around 190 hp. Based on the claimed efficiency figure, the A2 e-tron is expected to deliver an estimated WLTP range of around 453 km on a single charge.

The battery uses a cell-to-pack design, which improves packaging efficiency by removing traditional battery modules. Audi also says that the battery can be charged regularly to 100 percent without major concerns about long-term degradation.

More Efficient Electric Motor Technology

Audi has also improved the electric drivetrain of the A2 e-tron, making it around 10 percent more efficient than previous systems. The improvements include silicon carbide power electronics, reduced motor energy losses, updated stator windings, low-friction transmission oil and a taller 10.2:1 gear ratio for improved highway efficiency. The updated thermal management system also improves home charging efficiency, which Audi claims reaches 89.6 percent.

A2 e-tron Gets V2L and V2H Technology

The Audi A2 e-tron will come with advanced charging features, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology. This feature will allow owners to use the electric hatchback as a power source for external devices with up to 2.3 kW output. The EV will also support vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality, allowing it to work as a home energy storage system when connected with compatible charging equipment.

More Battery Options Could Be Added Later

Audi has currently revealed details only about the 140kW version of the A2 e-tron, but more variants are expected to join the lineup in the future. Since the A2 e-tron shares its platform with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, Audi could introduce a larger battery option similar to the ID.3’s 79 kWh NMC battery pack.
